The answer is that the defense and special teams are much, much better than we thought.

Flacco is a very good, strong armed QB whose game greatly benefited from the change to Jim Caldwell.

My point is still in direct contradiction to needing a 300 yard passer to compete for a Super Bowl.

FWIW, Flacco is averaging 248 per game in 2013. Alex Smith is averaging 223.

So did Flacco throw deep very much? Did playoff QBs throw deep? What was the avg pass per attempt for winning QBs in the playoffs?

Do I think he will likely win a SB? No. Not at all. But I definitely think the last 2 post-seasons have given us a couple of data points that suggest that yes, Alex Smith absolutely can win a team a SB.

Ok thanks. Flacco carried the Ravens in the playoffs and made big time throws. I just can't see that happening with Alex but I could be wrong. I think for him to win it all he will have to have a dominating D that carries the team.

Nope.

I think it CAN happen. There's been a few games where he's shown he can. He just doesn't do it often..or often enough.. as almost everyone here has mentioned.

He had a dominating defense that carried the team and still came up short - in part due to his own incompetence on 3rd down.

because Charles was our most important player before Smith arrived, and remains so, imo...

it rarely works that way...which is why I cut Smith no slack, he was acquired to do more than not turn the ball over (and I believe that Reid expects more too)...that's treating him like a child

Yeah, no.

The situation couldn't have been more "right" for him in New England.
