FCC Could Ban The Word "Redskins" From Radio & TV - Are The "Chiefs" Next?

These political correctness people are driving me nuts.

If they get their way concerning the Redskins perhaps they will go after the "Chiefs" next.

"WASHINGTON, D.C. (GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY LAW SCHOOL) — The Federal Communications Commission [FCC] could effectively ban the use of the word "Redskins" by broadcasters, based upon a filing by several former FCC commissioners and other communication law experts, if the team's name isn't changed, according to a letter sent Friday to team owner Dan Snyder which concluded that using the word "Redskin" on the air is likely to be contrary to federal broadcast law because it constitutes an "indecency" if not an "obscenity."

The letter from former FCC chairman Reed Hundt and 11 other broadcast law experts says the R-word is the most derogatory name a Native American can be called, and is an "unequivocal racial slur" akin to the N-word. They liken the use of "Redskin" to an "obscenity," which is illegal on the public airwaves in any form, rather than simply an "indecency" which is restricted to certain times of the day."

I usually don't enter theses threads cause nothing ever comes from it, but...

Lakota here...and grew up on the rez. Near Oglala.

I love all the Cherokees in the world as well. Must be a bazillion of them lol.

Anyway, I don't have a problem with the word Chiefs either. Redskins, imo, is pretty derogatory, but to be honest, renaming Washington's team is not going to get the Wasichu to keep a single treaty they signed. It does make the PC crowd feel better so there is that.

Sometimes I think it's weird when they want to change any college nickname that references chiefs or Indians, etc. It seems counterproductive to me - why do you want your culture pushed further into obscurity? Most times the name doesn't seem disrespectful.
But I can see why someone would not appreciate the name Redskins.

Yeah let's draft him as a WR #1 overall. I mean he runs a 4.56 and we've never seen him catch a ball. GENO GENO GENO!!
6'5" RB FTW!!

One person's 'asshole' is another person's hero, and I hope you'll forgive me for insisting that I make that call for myself...and I'll fight to protect your right to do likewise.
Yep !

But I think it's too little too late on the 'right not to be offended' thing WHICH is ONLY reserved for the Progressive Left because it's only Marxists that can be offended you know Especially when it means neutering the 1st Amendment for those of opposing political positions.

no no no I did not mean the #1 pick, only if he falls, though I doubt he will fall THAT far.

I'm just messin' with ya.
But seriously, we would have to draft him in the 3rd or lower if we were gonna use him like that.

Most Chiefs fans probably know it, but "Chiefs" is in reference to the mayor of KC who helped Lamar Hunt move the team up from Dallas. His knickname was "The Big Chief" as I recall.

Of course, the arrowhead emblem implies Native American origin, and the original Chiefs emblem was pretty blatant.

I had a stocking cap with this emblem on it, and the words "Big Red from the Flatlands."
