Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 21, 2013, 6:46 PM EDT
Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

No way I'd do it. It would be the first of the #2's or nothing.

Mario was drafted as a DE not an OLB. That change happened when Wade Phillips went to the Texans.
The positional value didn't change any when he made the move, though.

This isn't like drafting Glenn Dorsey to be a gap-penetrating 3-tech in the 4-3 and then moving him to DE in a 2-gap 3-4. THAT would be a position change that would not "count"

I think he means because they already traded for a QB so everyone knows thay're not going to draft one # 1 overall. In theory it keeps others from wanting to trade for the # 1 overall pick in order to get a QB. Deal is, nobody would have done that anyway for these QB's so I don't agree with that whole line of thinking.

Hm.

Then there’s a chance that the Chiefs will decide they simply don’t want the headache of a guy on a one-year deal who doesn’t want to yield the left side to the first overall pick in the draft. Since it’s too late to rescind the franchise tag, the Chiefs could decide to trade him without an extension. Though that arrangement would generate less compensation for the Chiefs, a condition could be added that would give Kansas City an extra pick or two if Albert signs a new deal with his new team.
That may have to be what we do. Who knows.

According to that article, Dolphins haven't even talked to us in 5 days.

So maybe the trade is off.

Of course, if Albert isn’t traded he risks being moved to right tackle, or possibly being benched.
I still don't really see that happening. Even if he isn't traded and they take Joeckel or Fisher at 1.1.....they'll just start them at RT for 1 year and move them next year.

At this point, I don't know if I'd rather have Geno at first overall or trade down with the Jets and get two legit playmakers. It's not getting a lot of run, but if we were able to trade down I'd love to pick up Tyler Eiffert. Moeaki to me is just a bust(ed). Guy can't stay healthy, and this offense (and QB) needs a playmaking tightend.

EDIT: Nah, I'd still rather have Geno.

Von Miller went 3rd overall, and frankly I don't see any difference between the top 3 picks. Usually they are about the same caliber of player and need dictates order.

One reason why QB usually goes first overall is because you have to have absolutely god awful quarterbacking to draft that high. That, and the obvious potential for reward that drafting the position carries.

The public pressure is turning against Miami on this deal.

When he either plays bad, maybe good, at G or RT for the Chiefs he then becomes less valuable. If he chooses not to play those positions then he’s not a team player. Either way Chiefs own this guy and if he causes them a headache, they in turn could cause him to lose millions.

Albert, you’re a top 15 LT, not a top 5, everyone in the League would choose Joeckel or Fischer over you. Get over yourself and take the money you’re worth, $6-7million.

a 30 year old w/ a bad back just isn’t worth $9m/year. Miami would be better suited trading up and nabbing one of the 3 LT’s in the draft and paying roughly half what Albert wants.

The dolphins would be stupid to trade for this broken down malcontent.

Dolphins would be fools to trade a 2nd rounder plus pay huge $$$ for the 25th rated tackle. KC is moving on for a reason Miami.

Albert has no motivation to sign for less now when he can make $9.8 mil this year, play well & show that the back is good and see if the LT market improves next year. It’s not likely to be any worse.

This deal and the Revis deal make a lot of sense. Plenty of washed-up has-been players end up retiring in FL once their careers are done, and these two are both done. Might as well get a place close to Boca now.

For Miami to give up a high pick and sign a malcontent with back issues to a long term deal is borderline insanity. The draft is rite with tackles this year and they would be better served to forget about Albert. Let the Chiefs keep him.

Don’t like the idea of trading a 2nd rd pick for Albert. Miami needs to keep their picks and find their own players. Ireland and Philbin keep talking about building through the draft. So lets GO! Practice what you preach!

I would rather play Albert this year under the franchise tag and let him hit FA next year (for a 3rd round comp pick) than ****ing draft a LT at 1.1.
