Romney: 47% of Americans are victims

I guess this maybe the kill shot for his campaign. I know some of you believe you this and won't find a problem with what he said but as a person running for POTUS you probably shouldn't write off 1/2 the country especially in a disparaging way.

Quote:
A hidden camera video of Mitt Romney at a fundraiser shows him talking disparagingly of people who will vote for President Obama.

Said Romney: "There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what...These are people who pay no income tax."

He adds: "My job is is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

There are tons of deductions out there. Child Tax credit is the first one that comes to mind. That's an easy $1K right off the top.

If it truly is the latter, then holy shit he is alienating a LOT of people, repubs and dems alike. I would venture to say he is alienating the majority of the country, especially the 18-30 year old demographic that is either still in school or still early in their careers.

Its obviously not elegantly stated, but hes not wrong. People just dont like hearing the ugly truth about themselves.

His campaign is in no jeopardy because nothing this man could do would ever change their vote.

It's considered an "entitlement" by democrats too, because that's how the word is defined.

You don't think that alienating an entire segment of working class Americans is wrong?

The word has two definitions.

When was the last time you told a Senior Citizen that they were part of the "Entitlement Culture" and what was the result?

Maybe I'm incorrect, but for the 47% to be FACTUALLY true, wouldn't the following also need to be true?

1) Everyone who files no income taxes is voting for Obama.
2) Everyone who has already decided to vote for Obama files no income taxes.

No he is referring to people that don't pay income tax. It is a common talking point with conservatives especially on this board.

The big question is how come there is no big stink of a hidden video? If some conservative news outlet did this, the liberals would be up in arms.

Has Romney Been Reading Bastiat?
Posted by Wilton Alston
"Government is the great fiction, through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else." ~ Frederic Bastiat
No. Not even.

When Romney said "there are 47 percent who are with him [POTUS], who are dependent on government, who believe that, that they are victims, who believe that government has the responsibility to care for them" he was roughly half right. Very. Roughly. What he left out is that the "other" 47 percent, those that are with him [Romney] are after the same thing. Admittedly, the number of people who are unrepentant tax feeders, to use Will Grigg's apt description, is likely (hopefully?) lower than 94 percent. The naive, hopeful dreamer in me would peg it at probably closer to 65–75 percent. Whatever the exact number is, the simple fact of the matter is that politics—particularly in the U.S., but abroad as well—is dominated by sociopaths with megalomaniacal tendencies who are often attended to and served by sycophants with dependency issues.

Me and the other 25–35 percent just wish they'd all leave us the hell alone.
Yup!

Fortunately, it's been a long time since I earned $20k a year and without children, never qualified for any deductions. Taxes were withheld and I had to file a 1040 EZ each year and probably received a couple hundred dollars back, max.

So, if I take your word and numbers at face value (not an insult, just clarifying), isn't Romney pissing off tens of millions of people with this comment?

Keep in mind a full-time minimum wage worker is going to be making around $15-16K a year.

That is a LOT of voters.
