I've always been curious on onsides kicks. Is it not possible to put the thing straight up in the air high enough that it becomes a 50/50 proposition? It seems like that would be advantageous compared to the regular system that gives the receiving team a better position to recover.

If you kick it high enough, it still has to go past the 10 yard, but the kickoff return team (if properly coached) can wave for a fair catch, and catch it.

You'd have a better chance of recovering it if it bounces around than to kick it straight up in the air, but I am no math wiz or a statistical analyist.
