Chiefs' Sutton looking for defense to elevate its game

Quote:
Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton was asked about the play of Anthony Hitchens and Reggie Ragland on Thursday October 18, 2018, and instead of singling out the two players, said that everyone has to elevate their game.

I don't know about improving the defense, but to give the team a better chance at winning?

Give the defense fewer chances to screw up... If I'm Andy Reid, I strongly consider going for it on 4th down when two factors are present: (1) the ball is anywhere past the 50-yard line (on the opponent's side of the field); and (2) the distance to convert is 4 yards or less.

Given the chances of the opponent scoring when they get the ball versus the chances of a KC conversion on 4th down, I start going for it a lot more often.

All of this. Let them hunt and kill with a vengeance. Let them release their inner gladiator.

They (the players), can start the process by not listening to Sutton.

I can't believe people not only think this shit...but then type it and hit "POST".

Mahomes would never do that - that's the type of shit that team cancers like Jeff George do to divide a locker room. You ever hear Tony Gonzalez talk about the Vermeil teams having all-out brawls between offense and defense?

No wonder they couldnt win a single playoff game...

FFS, Mahomes is also close enough to the situation to realize that Sutton isn't the problem; the players are...

You have Clark threaten to murder one of their family members at random. Anybody on the defensive side is fair game. And really sell it. Tell them how much he's already got down on the hit. Nobody knows whether it's gonna be their mom, or their kid, or their dog....

Sutton needs also "elevate" his "game"! Im thinking he needs to spend an afternoon on Madden to practice, and see what new innovative defensive schemes have developed!

When you threaten all time marks it's both.

This is GROB all over again.

It takes a perfect pairing of lack of talent and lack of awareness on the DC's part on how to use what little you have to manage this level of suck...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

I remember when GCUN replaced GROB...everyone thought that changing coordinators would solve the issue.

The defense actually got worse...because lack of talent.

No matter what scheme is implemented and what blitzes or coverages are called, these players aren't going to become sure tacklers or improve their coverage.

I don't why people don't understand that...

I'm pretty sure those LBs aren't dropping into pass coverage on their own volition.

I'm pretty sure they're watching RB's and TE's run right past them because they're not actually dropping into coverage.

Firing Sutton isn't a cure all.

Rabble already brought it up but this team can't afford to have another "2004" moment. The 2004 offense was arguably BETTER than the 2003 offense and the team didn't even make the playoffs because they put all the blame on GRob, hired Gunther, and the defense got WORSE.

This team absolutely must recognize that a defense this bad is the result of BOTH coaching AND a lack of talent.
