Formerdb Camp Report #2 - Chiefs-Vikes + Carr, Flowers & dBo

here's report #2. enjoy fellas. interviews with Brandon Flowers, Brandon Carr and Dwayne Bowe at the bottom.

http://www.chiefscoalition.com/cc/Chiefs-News/163.html

Jared Allen was the Chiefs' big sack daddy last year. His trade to the Vikings was one of the biggest headline stories during the offseason. So the anticipation of Allen going up against his old team and rookie left tackle Branden Albert was juicy ... and then the Vikings blew the wind out of our sails.

No Allen, no Steve Hutchinson, no Matt Birk, and no Antoine Winfield, Pat Williams, Kevin Williams. In fact, no player over 30 made the trip to River Falls. So what happened??? Players still got busy, on both sides.

Chiefs - Vikings Scrimmage

by FormerDB

ChiefsCoalition.com

11 ON 11 & SCRIMMAGE

The stands are packed; red & gold, purple & gold, cheers, ooohhs & ahhhhs. Teams are paired up on the main field for this. Media are on the track, constantly moving for a good view, including me. Overall, the Vikings offense opened up down field several times; the Chiefs kept everything underneath with bootlegs, out routes and connections in the hook zones.

Highlights? They didn't leave us bone dry, especially Larry Johnson and Adrian Peterson.

* LJ ... OooooooWEEE!!! If any of you hit River Falls next summer, chances are you'll see the Vikings' rookie safety Tyrell Johnson *STILL*... I repeat, ***STILL*** picking himself up off the turf following one of the most vicious stiff arms I've ever seen. LJ broke off a run off the right tackle and slipped into the second level. He was angling towards the sideline to open it up. Then here comes Johnson, he reaches out with both hands to stop LJ, and LJ just uncoiled his left arm right into the dude's chin. His face hit the ground so darn fast I didn't know how to react.

* But Adrian Peterson can do his thang too. In fact, against the first team defense going in from the 20 yard line, Peterson caught a swing pass out of the back field. He came out to the right side. Bernard Pollard had him in man. Pollard came up to meet him behind the line of scrimmage after the catch, Peterson made a quick side step ... Pollard, gone!! Next, Demorrio Williams gets a slight stiff arm from Peterson, just enough to counter Williams' momentum and render Williams useless. And then he juked Jarrad Page. Peterson did all this within the space of six yards.

* LJ broke off three outside runs while Barry Richardson was at right tackle and had nice gains each time. Richardson is clearly more advanced in his run blocking that pass blocking right now.

* Brandon Flowers ... swat - boom!!! The loud swat was Flowers' hand smacking the ball. The boom is the ball hitting the ground when Flowers broke up a slant thrown by Tavaris Jackson to Sidney Rice. Flowers was on Rice so darn tight, Flower's face is now on Rice's jersey instead of Rice's number. The pass break-up was so forceful, Vikings fans reacted in awe.

* Again, when the Vikings went in from the 20, (Vikings RB) Maurice Hicks ran wide to the right side against the second team defense. I kept my eye on Napoleon Harris. The guard reached him at the second level and he was just flat-footed. You can figure out what happened after that. He was swallowed up and Hicks scored. No pursuit from the inside at all.

* Pat Thomas was beaten by Brad Cottam and Jackie Battle in man coverage. Against the Vikings, he was beaten by Maurice Hicks on a swing pass. Completing the pass isn't the thing that concerns me. It's that Thomas never got over to lay a hand on him; Harris kept running untouched down the sideline. That's a play that should usually be a three to five yard gain, but turned out to be a lot more.

1 ON 1

It's here where I saw some things that bring encouragement, and some things that can induce vomiting. Let's start with the saddest matchup so far.

Rudy Niswanger (Center) vs. Fred Evans (DT) ... Evans is an UNDRAFTED free agent from freakin' Texas State-San Marcos ... HUH??? Here goes. Niswanger snaps the ball. Evans stays real low, explodes into Niswanger's chest, stands him up and then uses Niswanger's body as leverage to spring forward with his first step towards the quarterback. He pulls Niswanger back towards his backside and explodes forward. Poof ... he's gone!!! Now, I'm straight-up honest right here. Niswanger fell right on his face! It was pathetic. Remember in my first report, I told you that T.J. Jackson did the exact same thing, only Niswanger didn't fall flat that time.

Branden Albert (OT) vs. Brian Robison (DE) ... Albert left him on the outside looking in off the first snap. He anticipated the speed rush nicely and kept Robison out of the play. But on the second snap, Robison gave Albert that speed for the first two steps, and then busted it back inside for his counter. Albert beaten.

Barry Richardson (OT) vs. Ellis Wyms (DT) ... exact same results as Albert. The first snap resulted in Richardson manhandling Wyms' outside rush but Wyms busted the inside counter just as Robison did and won on the second snap.

Tre Stallings (G) vs. Leger Douzable (DT) ... Douzable is 6'4" 304lbs and uses the bull rush like Tank Tyler. He created some serious push when he bull rushed Stallings. He didn't reach the QB, but had there been a rush from the ends, the QB would not have been able to step into the pocket.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Connor Barth did most of the kicking and was pretty accurate. He made field goal tries that traveled 36, 40, 43 and 48 yards but missed on 45 yard attempt.

If God wasn't a football fan before tonight then he is now, because Dustin Colquitt kicked a couple that had to bang up against the Pearly Gates. Two punts traveled 65 and 60 yards respectively, with majestic arches. WOW!!!

Tyron Brackenridge, Maurice Leggett, Brandon Carr and Dimitri Patterson all looked effective as gunners on the punt cover team. Each broke through double team containment several times.

I HEARD IT

Ever hear a woman shriek upon seeing a mouse? That's what Dwayne Bowe sounded like when the trainer stretched him out on the sideline. He was about six feet from me, prompting me to say 'Damn Bowe, you know what you sound like?' He looked up and said "Dude you need to get out here and run till your legs feel like they're ready to fall off."

'Wsup Bonecrusher?'

"Just chillin Baby."

'You look like you're feeling it.'

"You know it! I'm feeling it. I got to right?"

'You know it.'

- Bernard Pollard and me chatting it up as he's getting a blow and drying his face before heading back out.

MY TAKE

Dwayne Bowe looks like he's been going to the Chad Johnson school of gab. He loves the attention and can talk it up. He's the swagger swinger on this team. He's full of confidence, flavor and entertainment.

The offense didn't open it up against the Vikings, and Bowe briefly explains why But ESPN's John Clayton, former Chief Kendall Gammons and I were debating what we're seeing.

Clayton thinks the Chiefs are going to be pretty bad again this year. He complained that they kept everything underneath during this joint practice. Gammons told him, until they can trust the O-line, they will use the short pass. I don't think the Chiefs will be as bad as Clayton does but I did point out to Gammons that they must be able to stretch the field at some point because LJ will see eight, even nine in the box right from the start, so trying to throw passes into already crowded underneath zones will be extremely challenging. Gammons agrees, but he's like me in thinking the Chiefs won't be as bad as Clayton thinks. Gammons doesn't think Barry Richardson will beat out Damion McIntosh either. He needs more work on pass protection and I agree based on my limited exposure.

I say the Chiefs need to draft a middle linebacker early next year. Clayton says quarterback. I told him he's crazy because Brodie Croyle hasn't had a fighting chance to show he's good. Plus, I will always argue that it takes a QB three to five years to become solid, if not good. Clayton says some coaches don't have that much time. Well tough, these guys aren't robots or computers and I told him it isn't Croyle's fault that Herm Edwards gave the coordinator's job to someone without previous experience.

Pay close attention to Rudy Niswanger this preseason. I'm not impressed with his ability against bull rushers at all. I want to see if he gets better than what I've picked up on so far.

ONE ON ONE *** GIVE IT TO ME RAW

We hear from two rookie cornerbacks, Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr. They try to explain the transition and learning curve they're trying to master. And we chat with wide receiver Dwayne Bowe. We start with Carr.

Brandon Carr

Carr: It's way different from college. The receivers are bigger, faster and stronger and definitely smarter so you have to be that much quicker. You have to know that much more about your technique.

Formerdb: How many different coverage techniques were you taught in college?

Carr: We had maybe three.

Formerdb: And how many with the Chiefs?

Carr: (laughs) ...a lot. Any given down and distance, you gotta change your alignment.

Formerdb: OK, how about bump-n-run?

Carr: Outside technique. But in college we played inside the whole time. All my technique changed when I got here. My man technique (man to man) we did the "inch back" which means you give ground. Here, you just hold your ground and play them head up.

Formerdb: Is it your intention to start by opening day? Are you told there's a position open?

Carr: My intention is to help the team any possible way on the field. That would be nice to start, but if that's not what the team and management wants then I'm going to do my part.

Formerdb: What's your strength? Bump-n-run corner, off man, zone?

Carr: In college we played mostly zone. But when I came here, because of my size, I can handle a lot of receivers so my bump-n-run has gotten a lot better, so that's what I like.

Brandon Flowers

Brandon Flowers: I had about four or five techniques in college. My coach came from the Bears, so we ran a lot of the Bears type defense. So in college everything I learned came from the Bears but when I came here I had to throw it all out and learn a whole new system so just a lot to process and get better everyday.

Formerdb: Is there a difference in man coverage in college compared to what you have here?

Flowers: Definitely, in college we played soft man where we just mirrored the guy. Here, they want you to get your hands on him and be physical early. In our off coverage, we play four yards. In college, we played eight or nine yards off, so it's just lining up playing different techniques. In college we back pedaled lot, here we never back pedal.

Formerdb: What's your strength? In your highlights you excelled in Cover 2 zone.

Flowers: We ran different coverages every play in college. I know I play strong zone because I can see the quarterback and read, but I also like to play physical and come down hill. In college it's more zone, but here you don't want to play a lot of zone in the NFL. You want to get your hands on a man and don't let him run free. So with my man-to-man technique, I like playing man more.

Formerdb: Is this defense what you like to see or is there another step you guys have to take?

Flowers: We gotta turn it up another notch. I would never settle for this defense. We could be first in the NFL and I'd still want to turn it up another notch. We can always get better.

Dwayne Bowe

Formerdb: You comfortable with this receiving group?

Bowe: Very comfortable, very comfortable. The guys are young but they listen, they pay attention to detail and they don't look young. They're out there running plays and they're running fast.

Formerdb: Who's your downfield threat, who's going to stretch the field?

Bowe: We're not going to show everything in practice here. But during the season you will be catching me 40 to 50 yards down field.

Formerdb: How about Devard Darling and Will Franklin?

Bowe: Those guys are fast, they're way faster than me. I don't want to give you everything but we have three MEAN deep threats and teams are going to see. I hope they get ready for it.

I like dbowe on the field, but I like the rest of it if it is fun, but I can see the fans turning on him.

Great report thanks.

I am really concerned now about the center and middle linebacker position and maybe the Chiefs can pick up a veteran or two when cuts are made.

I never knew that was a perk at practice (but I'd guess that would help to keep up morale).

Sorry, I appreciate what Casey did as a Chief, but it was time for him to move on. Rudy needs time working on his craft at center just like the other young guys. PATIENCE.

wiegmann is not suited to an inside power running game ....... at ALL!!

and it looked like he had lost a step

now given that everyone on offense looks like they have lost a step with dumb, dumber and dumbest running the offense last year, but wiegmann still looked old.

Unfortunately it looks like most of the current players on OL aren't suited for a power running game either.
