Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 21, 2013, 6:46 PM EDT
Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

Apparently Albert has been reading Chiefsplanet and is as delusional about his worth as most here are. He's an above average LT who has had a few good years and a few awful years... if he thinks he deserves Jake Long money, he's ****ing insane. The Dolphins are a piss poor organization and even THEY aren't stupid enough to go for that.

That's not what it means to take the best QB in the draft.

You take the guy with the best combination of potential, talent, and coachability in addition to his pro readiness.

That's the reason why Cam Newton went a full round before Andy Dalton and Colin Kaepernick. It's why Ryan Tannehill went two rounds ahead of Russell Wilson.

It's not a "guarantee" of anything. You're taking the best and most likely bet to be the best QB. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

And that goes for any position.

Well I'm in the train of thought we are likely to have Albert at LT and very possibly a rookie at RT. The only reason I say take a rookie OT still is the fact it isn't likely Albert is going to be much easier to deal with for a long term contract period! We can only pray he comes to his senses and he re-signs here for a lower price than he is asking now.

If Smith or Barkley came to KC?

Either would be the best pro in this draft based on their skillsets and the pieces already here.

But I'm sure people will be crowing when they go to shift organizations and bomb, saying "I told you so."

You're assuming that these guys actually think Geno Smith is the best QB in the draft. That could be because they don't like Geno, or because they believe a different QB better fits their system, or because they see a guy with upside and believe they can develop him to be better than Geno.

It would be a different story if teams were falling over Geno. But the Chiefs were desperately shopping the pick and there's recent rumblings that Geno could fall quite a bit in the draft. I think drafting a QB in the 2nd round is completely acceptable. But they better be right.

You still have Tyler Wilson, Manuel, Bray, Glennon. And if we're talking pure upside, Dysert. I think Geno is better than all these guys, but it's not head and shoulders and I could see reasons why maybe the team favors one of these guys over him. This is actually a draft rich in second to third round talent.

Seems like he really thinks he is a top 5 LT, when in reality he is an above average LT in the 10-15 range.

Apparently he doesn't since NO ONE is willing to give him that kind of money. But of course it could be that the posters here at CP are FAR SMARTER than the ENTIRETY of the NFL. Yeah, let's roll with that.

Teams rarely make these kinds of trades.

Doesn't mean jack shit about Albert's value.

It happens all the time on here.

Good God, you'd think some posters get erections from talking about how Mark Sanchez isn't that great.

If Geno Smith gets Blaine Gabberted, people on here are going to be insufferable douchebags. Nevermind the fact that Alex Smith still will not have won jack shit for us. Andy and Dorsey will get a pass because they did what they thought was right. Meanwhile the "Geno Mafia" will get crucified for having an opinion about how a rock bottom team should best address getting out of that pit they've been in since the ****ing Clinton administration.
