Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

Most #1 overall picks aren't being used to replace a good young player just entering his 2nd contract.

If that's what you're doing with the pick, then the guy you're replacing him with had better be elite.

EVEN IF YOU DO YOU'RE STILL JUST TREADING WATER.

What's the upside?

We go from 1 sack allowed to 0?....

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

That's my point.

I'm not okay with using 1.1 to get a guy that's "in the top 5" in his 2nd year. At that point you're using 1.1 on a nominal upgrade and some cost savings. That's not good enough.

If you're using 1.1 on a LT when you already have a damn LT, then he needs to be a guy that's a 5-year All-Pro. If he's not Joe Thomas, the pick is a failure.

And I don't think that's placing an unreasonably high bar on a guy that's being brought in to replace a young player that's already very good.

@Jason_Madson: John Clayton says on @610SportsKC that Chiefs are going to trade Albert to Miami on draft day. Don't want to tip their hand so early.

Sorry if RP.

The team has positions of need at spots where the talent is considered fairly good. Combining them makes sense. Like 2009, this is a draft where you'd rather be trading down into the teens or twenties and getting picks than drafting at the top. Like 2009, most teams will probably be unable to trade down because everyone already knows where the value is.

Again, take a look at 2009, which is the most recent similar draft, except there's not a Stafford available. For all the bitching about Jackson that goes on here, when you look at the top 12 picks

Matthew Stafford
Jason Smith
Tyson Jackson
Aaron Curry
Mark Sanchez
Andre Smith
Darius Heyward-Bey
Eugene Monroe
B.J. Raji
Michael Crabtree
Aaron Maybin
Knowshon Moreno

Jackson went pretty much where he should have, among that group (one can argue his exact spot in the top 5, but he's there). The problem is that it was the lower picks that had the better players. This draft appears to be similarly tough to read and similarly likely to see the better players go outside the top of the draft, according to most reports.

Unless you're willing to grossly overpay for the guy, you can get a second for Albert this year, or a compensatory 3rd (at best) for Albert in 2015.

So once again - if the draft is hard to read, you keep the young guy that you already know is going to be good and has already been on your team for 5 years.

Then you take a HR swing on the position with the greatest upside - i.e. Quarterback.

This is risk without reward.

Unless Fisher or Joeckel become All-Pros, in which case the gamble was correct and Reid and Dorsey played the draft well.

The idea would be signing him long term and dropping that 2013 cap number...

The QB position is considered down. You're essentially advocating pissing away the pick, unless you're sure that almost everyone is wrong about the QBs.

That's risk without thought.
