Wireless Surveillance Cameras

Has anyone recently purchased wireless cameras for outdoor surveillance around your house? I found this site and I'm getting ready to buy a couple of cameras and thought I would check with you guys first.

http://www.x10.com/homepage.htm

Any recommendations?

I'll catch that UPS guy next time.

I know the mods will want to move this to Media...gimmee a break alright?

I got a deal. A while back on the 4 cam system for 300. They work well and record on motion or schedule. You can also put it out to the net but I never did. Fixed position was the limitation but indoor or outdoor and can be extended with standard rj59 cable

http://menards.com/main/electrical/s...475-c-6470.htm

D link used to sell a kick ass cam but I haven't been able to find one anywhere. Dcs 5300 or the dcs 5300g ( wireless ). The d link had pan tilt and digital zoom for 3-4 hundred.

I've been looking at these cameras for a while. I hadn't seen the Foscam units before Bwana posted about them and they look pretty nice. I found if you use the coupon code "NEWYEAR" on their site you get a decent discount and it's free shipping.

That might work well where you're located, but I noticed this: "Operating Tempature 50°F to 104°F." Right now it's -7F outside.

The problem is, there are a lot of choices and I don't know much about any of them. I don't want to dish out my hard earned green for a trash can system that isn't going to work. After RMC's post, I'm more apprehensive than ever.

The local Costco has a package about like that and I noticed the same ambient temp ratings on in. I bet they get a lot of returns around here.

Yeah, I know but I'm willing to take that chance. Some send you a text when the motion sensor kicks in. We live out in the country so motion would be limited.

The only thing I'll say to look out for is that many of the IP cameras function fine, but their software is very limited. Given that mine is just for fun, I hooked it up with a little site called Mangocam and use that to just record pics for a bit when motion is detected. There are subscription-based sites out there that can handle long-term recordings and that kind of thing.

If you're wanting to run multiple cameras and have them recording all the time, you might want to consider software to run on a local desktop computer rather than uploading to the cloud. These things take up quite a bit of bandwidth, so they can drag your internet connection down pretty badly if you're not careful.

If you happen to look seriously, I can give you access to mine for a bit so you can check it out and see how it works. Here's a pic of my cats just so you can see the quality.
Actually, that's very clear resolution. Very promising results. Our router may not be able to pick up some of my intended locations. They're probably 50+ from the router.

I really like this option. Looks like it comes with it's own DVR for recording. Does 500GB work for the eight cameras?
