People who overestimate their political knowledge tend to believe conspiracy theories

Posting just because I'll be amused to watch the discussion. Not that there's anyone here this would apply to.

People who overestimate their political knowledge are more likely to believe conspiracy theories
By ERIC W. DOLAN June 11, 2018

People who overestimate their understanding of political issues are more likely to believe conspiracy theories, according to new research that appears in the European Journal for Social Psychology.

“Conspiracy theories about government actors and institutions are widespread across the political ideological spectrum,” remarked study author Joseph A. Vitriol, a postdoctoral research associate at Lehigh University. “These beliefs attribute outsized influence to hidden actors or clandestine groups who are perceived as the root cause of an important world event, action, or outcome.”

“Because conspiracy beliefs often preserve discredited assumptions or serve as a basis for dismissing information that challenges one’s worldview, they are often difficult to correct (as is true for many political misperceptions) and can therefore undermine the ability for citizens to effectively and ethically engage in the political process.”

“Indeed, these beliefs are not constrained to the politically disengaged or the uninformed. Instead, conspiracy theories are commonly endorsed and propagated by actors at the highest levels of political power and, as a result, are consequential for public policy,” Vitriol said.

“In short, conspiracy beliefs are important influences on citizens’ political judgment and behavior. This can undermine the ability of elected officials to address problems in society with evidence-based public policy and governance. By investigating the psychological underpinning of conspiracy beliefs, we are better able to understand how these beliefs form and spread. We are also better able to identify strategies for informing or educating the public and combating the influence of false and fabricated information on political psychology and behavior.”

That's not an argument but I'll bite.

My source was also The Daily Beast and that it was aired on a major network ABC, which was mentioned in both links. Again, reading skills on display here. The date refers to when it was mentioned and aired, so that is relevant.

They didn't need to know about 21st century America. They had timeless universal concerns about the nature of man and the nature of power. I don't know what you're suggesting because it's too vague and unspecified but no one around today, imo, is wiser than those men even though they weren't perfect.

Did it even air? I think the evidence is that the tapes were not "explosive" because I bet no one here remembers their content. Still no evidence from you.

They said they were doing a special report on the air. I don't recall where I heard it but I do remember it coming out, hearing about it, press about and that part played. Like I said, I was surprised about here voice sounding like it did as it didn't match what I thought she sounded like. She sounds like a man.

The secret tapes will show that the former first lady felt that her husband’s successor was at the heart of the plot to murder him....

The tapes were recorded with leading historian Arthur Schlesinger Jnr within months of the assassination on November 22, 1963, and had been sealed in a vault at the Kennedy Library in Boston.

The then Mrs Kennedy, who went on to marry Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis, had ordered that they should not be released until 50 years after her death, with some reports suggesting she feared that her revelations might make her family targets for revenge.

She died 17 years ago from cancer aged 64 and now her daughter, Caroline Kennedy, has agreed to release the recordings early....

A programme featuring the tapes will be aired by U.S. network ABC, and it is understood British broadcasters are in talks to show it here too.

ABC executives claimed the tapes’ revelations were ‘explosive’.

Also on the Daily Beast

There was an abc spokesman who claimed what was on them was erroneous is mentioned at the bottom of Mail link but no specific. I recall hearing a part of them played years ago. I was shocked at the sound of her voice. Never thought she'd sound as she did.
In my former life - we based our decisions on facts by examining the evidence that was available to us at any given time.

I grew up during that period when Kennedy was killed. Using nothing more than speculation - and nothing else - I came to the conclusion that what we were being fed (Warren Commission) was a bunch of crap - mingled in with a smidgen of facts - designed to reach the conclusion that they wanted to give the American people.

Remember - this is around the time of the Gulf of Tonkin lie and it was common knowledge back then that LBJ despised Kennedy and Kennedy despised Johnson, so there was a mutual hatred of one another.

Johnson was VERY friendly with several defense contractors and often said that Viet Nam would be a proving ground for new weaponry. Kennedy was wavering in his support for continued advisors (now the Green Beret - Kennedy's personal "Army") and was balking at sending more men in.

Now, having stated all this - Did Johnson lead a cabal that orchestrated the death of a sitting President? I have no clue. But honestly, it is a much better assumption than Fidel Castro, The Mafia or the Russians….So, my money would lay on Johnson - but again, no proof of any kind.

But let's be honest here. Who, in their right mind, would do something like this and leave a trail behind them. I have always thought that Oswald was the shooter - but he did NOT act alone. Oswald was the perfect idiot to take the fall. Jack Ruby was the perfect idiot to put a "period" on the whole affair. Quick, easy and nothing left behind.

Many people living today are just as wise (this is a statistical certainty). Values and circumstances are different. Modern values are clearly superior to those at that time that allowed slavery to exist. Circumstances are better too -- we don't shit in a bed pan and life expectancy is far beyond mid 30s.

I knew you'd be along shortly to defend your guy. You know where I stand on this. Cheney pushed the lies and I still think he's a war criminal for it. And he did lean on intel to make the policy fit the intel per people that were there and left.

Furthermore, the Congress turned over their authority to decide on going into Iraq which is unConstitutional. That right there is also illegal. But Bush/Cheney didn't even feel they needed the authorization from Congress either. Also illegal.

I don't see the relevance as it relates to the nature of man vis-a-vis the nature of power. Those don't change. They're part of the human condition which exists all through history.

You're making the routine left-wing case for a document as though it's written on rubber and not on parchment. Aka to make it mean whatever you want as you go along for a "living Constititution" instead of using Amendments. Asserting statistical certainties with no statistics and make a you rown personal value judgement that modern values are superior to Gasp— the one the left uses to trash our Founders with —slavery while ignoring the good. I would argue we're being placed into another kind of slavery—like a plantation for all of us.

You should read the document, the notes from the Convention and the Federalist Papers which made explanations of the document to get the Constitution ratified. There's is no greater document in human history for a govt that was the first of its kind and is still unique even if much of it has been destroyed by usurpation by BOTH sides.

So we'll have to agree to disagree.

I get a kick out of the people that think the governments of the world are covering up UFO's and alien contacts. I certainly think there are Aliens in our universe, but it is very doubtful we have evidence of their existence on this planet. Think about it. If they have made contact with us, that means that ALL of the countries of the world have agreed to collude with each other to cover this issue up. They'll hate each other, bicker about everything else. But Aliens? Nah. We are one on that issue.

USA and Russia cold war in the 80s. We're going to Nuke each other! But we'll agree on the aliens.

Christian nations and Muslim Nations. We wish to wipe each other off the face of the Earth! But yeah, lets agree to cover up Aliens together.

Anything curbing your personal liberty that you or anyone else posting on this board is experiencing isn't comparable in the least to slavery. You posted that and apparently own it. Please take some time to consider what would lead you to making such an absurd, disproportionate, and offensive comparison.
