North Carolina Congressional Map Ruled Unconstitutionally Gerrymandered

North Carolina Congressional Map Ruled Unconstitutionally Gerrymandered

Quote:
A panel of federal judges struck down North Carolinaís congressional map on Tuesday, condemning it as unconstitutional because Republicans had drawn the map seeking a political advantage.

The ruling was the first time that a federal court had blocked a congressional map because of a partisan gerrymander, and it instantly endangered Republican seats in the coming elections.

Judge James A. Wynn Jr., in a biting 191-page opinion, said that Republicans in North Carolinaís Legislature had been ďmotivated by invidious partisan intentĒ as they carried out their obligation in 2016 to divide the state into 13 congressional districts, 10 of which are held by Republicans. The result, Judge Wynn wrote, violated the 14th Amendmentís guarantee of equal protection.
If you aren't cheating, you aren't trying.

It seems to me like Republicans did (do) it more, thanks to Karl Rove's brilliant long game, but as long as Maryland is out there, the Democrats cannot say that they're innocent in the ways of gerrymandering.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this blossom into a non-partisan takedown of the system-eroding loophole, but each side is trying too hard to avoid having to look into the camera and admit they did it, even though when they did, it worked.

It won't ever be non-partisan. That's naive. Not even if you get courts involved, since they get appointed via politics and are also the result of elections.

This is the result of elections. I thought your side was big on "democracy?" I don't think so. It's only 'cause your side's ox is currently being gored.

Districting will never be non-partisan. While many of the people who actually do the work and provide options likely are attempting to be, the political forces always inject themselves.

Iím software could be developed to crest non-partisan districts.

I've personally worked on districting/redistricting and am very familiar with existing software that does just that.
You can utilize census block data to determine areas of equal populations without looking at demographics, but it also always gets into items such as school districts and other things that complicate the process.

The issue is that once the options(min of 5) are submitted, the politicians get involved. In my experience, the most vocal voices wanting to manipulate results were closer to your voting block than mine.

My biggest worry is that gerrymandered districts are creating havoc with the whole political system. Because of them, we elect more representatives that are on the respective fringes, and fewer moderates. As a result, Congress becomes amazingly divisive and dysfunctional, and fewer people willing or able to work "across the aisle" to get stuff done.

I have no idea if that is better or worse for Dems or Repubs, but I do think that is generally just bad for our entire political process/system.

It gets political when politicians start thinking about losing their seat or political parties feel like they're going to lose some leverage in a district or a seat somewhere.
