The food wasn't horrible, but the service was, and nothing was distinctive. Again the menu was IDENTICAL, but it was more like actual home cooking, where it's made from scratch and everything, but some things are colder than others and nothing has a signature flavor. The kicker was it had some of the worst service I've ever seen. Closed pretty quick. |

I think Stroud's is good, but definitely wouldn't go out of my way for it, and think some of the hype is weird.
I dunno, when I think of great mashed potatoes, I think of something closer to twice baked potatoes... they just have good old fashioned mashed potatoes, nothing terribly exciting. Same goes for other sides and food (from what I remember). The cinnamon rolls are the one thing to go out of your way for, those are special. |

I talked to the (then) manager at the one closest to me (119th and Strang Line) and he told me that the "employees were stealing the place blind". According to him, The folks from Corporate (Nashville) walked in one morning, fired everybody in the place and within a week, the place was shut down and shuttered......Go figure. |

Couldn't agree more. Stroud's just wasn't my cup of tea, from the old homestead (or whatever the hell that place with the 6 foot ceilings was) I just thought that there were better places for "homestyle" fried chicken at the time. No doubt in my mind whatsoever that Strouds hasn't been doing it right for a long, long time! |

Luv if you are going to be in Westport you might try McCoy’s Public House. They have an open patio, lots of beer selections and the food is pretty good. Beer Kitchen is right across the street and we really like Jerusalem Cafe. Lots of choices for you

I like all the opinions and learned alot about where to dine next time I am in town even though Hammock Parties didn't reveal his "2 Buck Chuck" wine bar I did learn about "Short Rib Ragu" at Pig and Finch. Even watched their chef put it together on Youtube.
Maybe this thread has prompted another ongoing thread focused on KC's dining out experiences? KC's dining is a dynamic scene that seems to be always growing just like in Indy, a city of same size and demographics. Something is always opening or closing or changing. Kansas City was the 30th largest metro in the U.S. with an estimated 2.1 million residents in 2015, according to the Census, while Indianapolis ranked 34th with 2 million people. But Indy’s metro population grew an estimated 5.25 percent between 2010 and 2015 while KC’s increased 3.89 percent. What is the best source these days for keeping up with not only the new places but also with staff and menu changes of old Favorites? Where is Don Pepe now? He started me thinking about cooking (really cooking) back in the '80's at his cafe on 39th next to Jazz. Too bad he wasn't much of a bookkeeper. I certainly trust word of mouth recommendations and critical condemnation from real people hiding behind monitors who you can interact with vs bloggers and wanna be journalists seeking favor from the restaurant.

Jerusalem has been there forever and I give it high ratings also. I cannot comment on Beer Kitchen or Char Bar. I sure miss places like the Dave's Stagecoach Inn as much a piece of Westport history as Kelly's. Columbus bar

I'm thinking Stroud's is out. I'm sure it's good, but it sounds like Lambert's in my area. It's sounding more and more like we'll just hit up Westport and choose something from there. It'll be good to recognize some names of places. I believe it's supposed to be a chilly day, so a patio probably won't be a deciding factor.

Walk down the street after and get a glass of champagne (there are about 30 to choose from) and the Pot De Creme at CaVa.

I'll second this,it's also my go to place in St. Joe,great menu with numerous selections A-Z.Plus you could easily eat for $30 or less.As for KC locations I'd suggest the Liberty or Zona Rosa ones.
