The Chiefs are taking Geno #1; bank on it

Andy loves him some QBs. And KC has been a bottomless pit of QB suckage. While folks initially freaked out over the ASmith signing (me included), once they locked up Bowe and Albert, it seemed pretty clear that Geno will be the choice at #1.

People say you don't draft a QB #1 to sit on the bench, the first pick of the draft isn't a backup QB. They are right. They say ASmith will be the starter, especially given his compensation. They are right. Ummm, does that mean that Geno is being groomed for a year or two behind Alex? Not necessarily.

What? That is nonsense!

Only in the traditional sense.

I think Reid and Dorsey are thinking waaay outside the box on this one.

If (when) the Chiefs draft Geno, the whole idea of a "backup" QB will be shook up. "Backup" will be a matter of semantics. "Starting" will be a matter of semantics as well.

Reid and Dorsey both see the need for 2 "starting caliber" QBs on a team in today's NFL. San Fran proved beyond a shadow of a doubt last year that it really pays to have 2 QBs on your team who can start for you.

If one "starting caliber" QB goes down, you have another "starting caliber" QB ready to be plugged in and the team doesn't miss a beat.

It has been repeated ad nauseum on this board that the QB is the most important position in all of football. When you have an offense that is predicated on throwing the football 40+ times a game, you can't afford to have a dropoff in productivity should one of your QBs goes down for a time, otherwise your season is effectively over.

Reid and Dorsey get this.

As fans, especially Cheifs fans, we need to rethink our conceptions of "backup" and "starting" and realizing we are entering an era of "starting caliber" QBs.

We are being built to win.

We are being built to win even in the face of adverse contingencies.

We are going to win.

And I like it.

I think the only shot we'd have at Geno is if we trade down to around #12 somehow and then he falls to us at #12 and Reid takes him...

and everyone is going to be all like

'omg if we take him at 12 why didn't we take him at 1'

well maybe Reid isn't in love with Geno...and has no issue with trading an asset to acquire more assets and then once he's sitting there at 12 maybe he thinks Geno is a good pick there because he added a few extra picks

but this idea people are holding on to that we may take Geno at 1 is ridiculous...it isn't going to happen. I wish there was a QB at #1 we knew we were going to take so this site wouldn't be so god damn depressing but that shipped sailed as soon as we traded for Alex Average.

Geno isn't going to be there at 12; if we don't take him at 1, the Raiders will take him at 3 if someone doesn't jump in front of them at 2. If you are the Chiefs, either take him at 1 or you have no shot at him.

Alex Smith is not a terrible QB.

He's just good enough to keep you competing for playoff bounce parties.
I agree, but two things are working against him.

1) when he throws 35 passes in a game, he only as 2 career wins. Between Foles and Vick, the Eagles averaged 38.5 pass attempts per game.

2) he only has 20 completions of more than 20 yards over the last 2 seasons combined. Defenses will cut the field up and Alex holds the ball as bad as Cassel.

If they pass on Geno at 1, they are making a statement to the other teams that they aren't worried about Geno ending up in Oakland.

They better be sure.

Yup. Barkley probably wouldn't be there at 12.

****, if the Browns are worried about Glennon and the Bills are concerned about Nassib, you could get seriously ****ed over.

I think the 35 passes a game is overblown considering how well he did when he threw the ball 30 times a game.

I think Reid is going to use him in a completely different way. Harbaugh was very conservative while Reid is going to make a bunch of attack based plays in the short and intermediate passing game.

Ill say the same as i did for the Cassel trade...I hope it works out because I'd love to be able to enjoy football again.

The last few years the best weeks are when KC didn't play.

Jags will just have to bite the bullet and draft him. No one with the organization was here when Gabbert was drafted.

Pretend Alex Smith does a good job, he is still injury prone as hell and how many seasons is he going give us? I don't expect him being our QB start of the season 2015 for two reasons, injuries and just not being what Andy Reid is expecting him to be & that is a passing QB.

Alex Smith much like Matt Cassell can hand off all day long to Jamaal Charles but if expect him to put drives together with his arm is another story.

I wonder if the Eagles are trying to make trade bait with Geno in case the Jags take Jordan and then they want to move down.

you have zero proof of that. All Great qbs have stability around them.

Case and point. When the mark brothers left marino, he no longer won games. When they stopped trying to upgrade the talent he stopped being anything but a first round knock out in the playoffs.

The patriots every single year upgrade on the offense. Gronk, hernandez, welker, brandon lloyd, julian edelman.

The packers, even though they had greg jennings, donald driver, james jones, yet, they still drafted randall cobb.

They didnt do that on either side of the ball for the 49ers. They signed cast offs like nate clements, antonio bryant, ashley lelie.

So for you to say that aaron rodgers, and tom brady could survive in those conditions because they are superior, thats your opinion. A simple myopic opinion. Which is perfectly understandable. You are simple, and myopic.
