Doctor Who

Been meaning to start a thread on this for years and never have for some reason. Big fan of both the original (what I've seen/remember of it...) and the rebooted series.

Don't forget the Jon Pertwee special this evening. Pertwee had the second longest run amongst the original series doctors.

Warning: contains spoilers for the Doctor Who 50th anniversary episode.

It's only fitting that on Doctor Who Day comes confirmation of news that's been circling in rumour-form for months. The new issue of Doctor Who Magazine has confirmed three additional cast members for the 50th anniversary special. You ready to hear them?

David Tennant. Billie Piper. John Hurt.

Those are the names reported so far to be joining Matt Smith in the 3D special, which is due to receive a limited worldwide cinema release this November. Happy Doctor Who Day everyone.

Doctor Who: new episode synopses arrive
News Louisa Mellor 3 Apr 2013 - 10:30
Share on printShare on emailShare on stumbleuponShare on twitter

Want to find out the premise for episodes five to eight of the current run of Doctor Who? Then step this way...

We've seen episode synopses for the first four Doctor Who adventures in this half of series seven, and now, fresh from the BBC, arrive four more taking us all the way to the as-yet untitled finale. They're brief, but tantalising as we're sure you'll agree...

First up is episode five, Journey to the Centre of the Tardis, written by Sherlock and The Curse of the Black Spot scribe Steve Thompson and directed by M.I. High's Mat King. Synopsis as follows: "The TARDIS has crashed, Clara is lost inside, and the Doctor has thirty minutes before his ship explodes!"

Then comes episode six, The Crimson Horror, written by Mark Gatiss and directed by The Snowmen, A Town Called Mercy, and Dinosaurs on a Spaceship helmer Saul Metzstein. Here's the summary: "Something ghastly is afoot in Victorian Yorkshire, as bodies are found with their skin a waxy, glowing red."

Followed by number seven, Neil Gaiman's Nightmare in Silver, directed by Neverwhere and Harry Potter's Stephen Woolfenden, and guest-starring Warwick Davies, Jason Watkins, and Tamzin Outhwaite. Here's the premise: "Hedgewick's World of Wonders: the perfect theme park day out - and ground zero for a deadly silver resurrection."

Finally, we come to the episode with no name, the series seven finale, written by Steven Moffat, and directed by Saul Metzstein. Here's the summary: "Someone is kidnapping the Doctor's friends, leading him towards the one place in all of time and space that he should never go."

'Doctor Who' Primer: Who Is The Great Intelligence?
Latest villain is not a new one in the Whoniverse, not by a long shot

This story contains minor spoilers for the "Doctor Who" episode "The Bells of Saint John."

New "Doctor Who" fans might have enjoyed hearing Ian McKellen's voice as the Great Intelligence, but may not have fully realized that not only is this the new big bad guy for the second half of Season 7, but it's an old foe as well.

In "The Snowmen," the Great Intelligence connects with a young boy in the 19th century, and uses its control over snow to nearly take over London. However, The Doctor is able to stop it, along with the now grown man, Dr. Simeon, played by Richard E. Grant.

The episode, however, had a number of Easter eggs that delighted classic fans of the series. That's because the Great Intelligence is not a new villain at all. In fact, he was first created by writers Henry Lincoln and the late Mervyn Haisman, and first faced The Doctor in 1967 when Patrick Troughton was carrying the sonic screwdriver.

At the time, the Great Intelligence was powering robotic Yetis, and was trying to gain solid form so that he could dominate the world. The Doctor encounters the Great Intelligence a second time in 1968 when the Yeti use the London Underground to mount a new attack in the episodes "The Web of Fear."

Since Dr. Simeon's laboratory appears to be when the Great Intelligence seems to really be forming, it is possible that the 11th Doctor, played by Matt Smith, may have set the events of that episode in motion. During the Christmas special this past year, he holds up a lunchbox with a map of the 1968 London subway system on it. When the Great Intelligence asks what that is, The Doctor identifies it as a "key strategic weakness in metropolitan living."

There was a strong chance that the Great Intelligence could have been right up there with the Daleks, Cyberman and The Master as major villains for "Doctor Who." However, soon after "Web of Fear" in 1968, Lincoln and Haisman reportedly had a falling out with BBC, and decided to depart "Doctor Who." The producers of the show let the Great Intelligence" disappear with them.

The full return of the Great Intelligence as a full-fledged bad guy rather than a one-off nod to the classic series is exciting for the "Doctor Who" franchise. And the fact that it seems the Great Intelligence was controlling Miss Kizlet since the 1968 encounter with The Doctor (she turns into a young girl when her software hacks are removed) plays into the overall continuity of the story.

One thing fans should note. "Doctor Who" has always had fun with names, and hiding messages inside. "Kizlet," the name of the character played by Celia Imrie, is rather unusual. Could there be future meaning?

"Doctor Who" airs Saturdays on BBC and BBC America.

50th Anniversary Filming (Day 1)
Published April 3, 2013
34

As filming on the 50th anniversary begins fans have been flocking to get a glimpse of the action.

On Tuesday it was taking place on private land near Neath in South Wales. Due to this fact there is, unfortunately, little to see with only glimpses of the action from afar. Regardless, spoilerphobes may wish to avoid reading further.

UPDATE: The Mirror has published some better quality shots of David Tennant. Joanna Page is also seen with a Elizabethan-style costume and red hair, leading to speculation she may be playing Queen Elizabeth 1.

Link to pictures after the jump.

What To Expect: Cold War
Published April 7, 2013

uest contributor Gustaff on what to expect from the upcoming “Base under Siege” episode Cold War.

It’s a tried and true format and probably one of the oldest story types in the Doctor Who book. If you couldn’t read the title for some reason, it’s the Base under Siege and pretty soon, we’re going to be seeing yet another one entitled Cold War. Up until now, we’ve had a few good Base Under Siege stories. Fans are probably already revisiting these stories while they wait in anticipation for the new kid on the block to see how it measures up to the big dogs. The big dogs of course…from New Who would be The Impossible Planet, Voyage of the Damned and The Waters of Mars. But what is Base under Siege and what can we expect?
The Plot

First off, we can expect the Doctor and Clara to arrive in some kind of enclosed environment. Space base? Sea base? Close…it’s a submarine this time…which is quite the attention grabber. Hope nobody gets sea sick. The base in question will be besieged by external forces. This time…Ice Warriors! They will be closing in fast and hard, crew morale will be low, you can even expect a traitor in the ranks to be revealed somewhere along the line. Oh and there is one more important hiccup I forgot to mention…if you think you can escape the plot by getting out of there, think again because there is NO WAY OUT!

Another important element in these stories is the Time Limit. There has to be some sort of 42 race to the finish line feel…that if they don’t get there in time, the base will explode or they will be killed or something major like that. A good thing to remember is that in these stories, it is supposed to be impossible to stay, yet impossible to leave.

I know it takes quite a lot of people to man a submarine, but usually the base only has a few people in the cast, so Ice Warriors…feel free to kill a few before the titles start up.

Moving on, the story also needs an Escape Route. If it didn’t have one, then the cast would all be in big trouble. In this story, the Escape Route looks like the TARDIS, but any good Escape Route can only be used at the last moment. Anything else is unacceptable. A good way of creating the last moment would be to put the Escape Route on the wrong side of the door! If that’s the case, you can expect the door mechanism to be broken or inaccessible or resilient enough to withstand the might of more people than you’ve currently got on hand. Bummer!
What will the base look like?

Like a submarine obviously. Never been inside one? Okay. The base will be cramped…clearly. Lots of corridors (this is Doctor Who after all). There will be customized barricades. There might even be ventilation shafts (doubt it) and there probably won’t be a lot of wide open spaces where a gun fight can be conducted.
The Twist!

The Twist is usually optional and turns everything you’ve learned so far on its head. The bad guys might not actually be bad or the good guys might not be as good as they claim to be. (It depends on who you meet first) The Twist is not to be toyed with. It may not be used facetiously and be made to look recognizable. It has to be quick and cunning and completely unexpected. You can probably expect (see what I did there?) the Twist to occur roughly ten to fifteen minutes before the base is scheduled to blow up…or flood.
The People
Every Base under Siege story has a certain number of stereotypical characters holding their positions while the enemy tries its best to break in. There is the Guy in Charge, usually a high ranking officer or an Uncertain Commanding Officer. Most of the time, he/she will be ambiguous and be prone to self-doubt or a loss of confidence. If Anyone can Die applies in the story, then he might not make it to the opening titles. There is also the Lancer, a character totally opposite to the Guy in Charge. If the Guy in Charge wants to go right, then the Lancer wants to see what Left has to offer. If the Lancer trusts our heroes, then the Guy in Charge doesn’t.

Usually in these stories, you have the one (or two) guys that are so heavily armed and so badass that they can’t possibly die…usually you don’t want them to either. However, they probably will die, however it might not be until the later portion of the story.

Also common in these stories are the Pain-in-the-Ass people. These people usually have some sort of illness or injury that spits on everyone’s plans. If the base is an elevator that has gotten stuck, you can expect at least one of the people inside to be pregnant. Unfortunately, the Pain- in-Ass characters don’t tend to die very often. They are some of the only people allowed to make it to the end of the story.

Lastly, we have the Traitor. How does the saying go: Every boat needs a captain…and a conspirator? (No! I made that one up, but it sounds like it fits) The Traitor needs no explanation. Or at least I hope not. Usually the Traitor’s motives include promotions, money, or he just has a few screws loose. He might be in the game for himself or the other side pays better. (What’s the currency on Mars again?) Luckily, you can expect the Traitor to die too, just not soon, but eventually. Fingers crossed. Oh and they normally die ironic or karmic deaths. Look out for that one!
Atmosphere

When we talk about the atmosphere, which is really important in this story; the base needs to inspire the viewers to give up hope that there is no chance of escape. Good examples where this has happened would be The Impossible Planet and Voyage of the Damned with the TARDIS completely ejected from the narrative. Given that the atmosphere would need to be tuned for a submarine, it’ll probably be very claustrophobic, damp and there might even be some under water turbulence to shake things up a little.

And there you have it. Everything you oughta know about Base under Siege. See what tropes and clichés you picked up in the episode and compare it with the things listed here.
