From that perspective, Smith looks like an improvement. However, I really do hope they have some competition in mind for him. If not Geno, then someone else legit to push Alex and keep him honest and hard-working. I want to trust Reid and Dorsey on this, but it's really hard. They must not think much of Geno.

Alex Smith's passer rating the past 4 years: 81.5, 82.1, 90.7, 104.1
Cassel's TD/INT the past 4 years: 16/16, 27/7, 10/9, 6/12 (59/44) ....plus 13 lost fumbles over the past 4 years.
Smiths TD/INT the past 4 years: 18/12, 14/10, 17/5, 13/5 (62/32) ....plus 6 lost fumbles over the past 4 years
...and one more just to prove the point we are getting a much better QB than Cassel..
Cassel's Completion %: 55, 58.2, 59.5, 58.1
Smith's Completion %: 60.5, 59.6, 61.3, 70.2
One is an overpaid, erratic player who turns the ball over almost as much as he throws touchdowns (59 TD, 57 TO). This player didn't once complete more than 60% of his passes.
The other has improved his passer rating each of the past four years and has 62 TD to only 38 turnovers. This player was under 60% completion only one of the past four years, and that was by 0.4%.
I don't even think this is a debate.
EDIT: Here is one more very telling stat - yards per attempt...
Cassel: 5.92, 6.93, 6.37, 6.48
Smith: 6.32, 6.93, 7.07, 7.97 (to put that in perspective, Brady's was 7.58, Manning's 7.99, Rodgers 7.78)

You don't trade the 34th pick in the draft on a 28 year old QB then use a 2nd or 3rd round pick to draft a QB.

The problem with comparing career stats is you have to consider how awful a situation Alex had for the first few years of his career, look back at who his receivers were, guys like Arnaz Battle, along with a piss poor offensive line and constantly revolving OC's, every single year.


If you compare their statistics over the past 2 1/2 seasons, there's no comparison at all, he's evolved into a better player than Cassel has ever been.

Alice Smith has never had a season close to as good as either of Cassel's best two seasons.
