If the hoax was carried out by multiple people, they were probably going to try and extort him later to prevent his story from being revealed. Unfortunately for the hoaxers, Deadspin beat them to it.

*this is only if it is indeed a hoax carried out by others. I'm not ruling out that Manti could be involved.
