The Kansas City Chiefs are in a very dark place, having been outscored 89-10 in two games (including Sunday’s 48-3 thrashing by the Lions). They’ve lost arguably their best defensive and offensive players, safety Eric Berry(notes) and reportedly halfback Jamaal Charles, to season-ending knee injuries, in consecutive weeks. That surprising AFC West title from last season seems like it happened about 100 years ago. So what now? Naturally, coach Todd Haley is feeling his rear end burn (in a figurative sense only, I hope). While Haley on the hot seat will strike most fans as odd – he was a legitimate coach of the year candidate in 2010, his second season in K.C. – people who know what’s going on inside the organization are nodding their heads unremarkably. That there is a lot of tension between Haley and his boss, general manager Scott Pioli, is the worst kept secret in NFL circles. The fact that they get along like vegetarians and Gates Barbecue shouldn’t be enough to get Haley fired, but the combination of that and a season from hell could certainly do the trick. Haley’s deal is up after 2012, so the Chiefs have to do something at the end of the year – extend him, or get rid of him – unless they’re fans of the lame-duck thing, which always works sooooo well in the NFL (see: Fox, John, Carolina 2010). At this rate, I’m not loving Haley’s chances of survival. We know Pioli’s not going to take the fall himself, and unless owner Clark Hunt decides he wants to get rid of both of them (don’t hold your breath), Haley likely will be the one to go. That’s too bad, for a number of reasons: 1) I think Haley’s a very good coach, though he’s habitually dissed in the media, a sign (I suspect) that someone in his organization whose name rhymes with cannoli likes to go off the record with certain reporters. 2) That whole “he’s a lousy offensive coach without Charlie Weis” is a laughable load of crap. Weis, who left for the University of Florida after a single season as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, was completely unenthused about the prospect of coaching Matt Cassel(notes). Haley stepped in, took the lead and helped Cassel play at an alarmingly high level that resulted in a stunning Pro Bowl selection. Haley, by the way, was a pretty good offensive coach when he was Ken Whisenhunt’s coordinator in Arizona and the Cardinals nearly won the Super Bowl three seasons ago. 3) I believe that if Pioli fires Haley, he’ll try to hire his old New England colleague Josh McDaniels, he of the disastrous tenure as Broncos head coach that included dubious personnel moves too numerous to mention, a cheating scandal and five victories in his final 22 games. When McDaniels, currently the Rams’ offensive coordinator, becomes K.C.’s next head coach, count on two things: I’ll remind you that you heard it here first and you’re going to be treated to a real diatribe.

Jmd isn't as bad as everyone makes him out to be. Granted he's a little immature and shouldn't be anywhere near the team on draft day. I think he's miles ahead of bill muir and haley from an offensive stand point. I wouldn't mind him.

All jokes on McDaniels aside the only hope a franchise would have with him is that their GM could keep him to just football and not failing with the roster.

Which is why KC would be a perfect fit for him, there is an organization in place,and he will just coach, nothing else. I think, given another chance, he will be a very good. He got the raw end of the deal when he came to Denver. He was hired as HC for a team with no structure above him and had to become the de facto GM. Yes, he mishandled the Cutler saga, but so did Cutler. And I imagine if most any starting QB in the NFL stopped returning calls from the teams owner, it would not end well. Yes there were some poor personnel decisions made, but again, he was hired as a HC, not a GM, and was put in that position because the existing GM was turrible.

I am not as down on Pioli and Haley as a lot of people are. No doubt there are some very strong arguements against both. For me, what Pioli does in the offseason with Cassel will be my determination with him. If he cans him and does all he can for a QBOTF then I still have hope.

As for Haley, as much as he has done wrong, I don't think he is a lost cause. For his sake he needs to figure out how to make everything look good except for Cassel for his case to be a strong one. How do you do that without good QB play though?

I don't know what to think of McDaniels. When I think of, or hear, his mistakes I think of Front Office mistakes. I would have loved to have him as an OC. As a HC, not sure, but I don't think it would be an automatic epic fail.

Most Superbowl winning coaches aren't in their first coaching stints, actually.

Numbers don't support the move of bringing in a coach that has won a superbowl with another team already, but that's not what was said...though I think its what you meant.

Give the guy time....remember, he didnt have an offseason to work with the offense like he did in Denver.

McDaniels - with one caveat - Cassel is long gone and we draft a franchise quarterback. Guy knows quarterbacks and his detracting factors wouldnt be present with Pioli calling the shots on personnel. The thing I dont like was the cheating....that could be the one thing that would deter me from backing him as a future coach in KC...he would also have to agree to keep his hands off the defense (not another situation similar to Mike Nolan in Denver, that KILLED the kid as much as Haley with Chan/Weiss)

Rob Ryan - defensive minded coach that earns his players respect everywhere he goes. I am a HUGE fan of the job his brother has done in NY and was a HUGE fan of his dads defenses back in the day...pressure pressure pressure. How that would mesh with Romeo and if he would even chose to retain Romeo is definitely a factor. The one thing that detracts him over the other two I listed is the question on if he would retain Romeo where I think Either Charlie or McDaniels absolutely would be fine with it.

Charlie Weis - Dont laugh. Everyone had to know that CW was a Pioli hire and he is the absolute best at working with quarterbacks and is a great game planner. He has mutual respect for Romeo and would let him do his thing while teaming with Zorn to build a powerhouse offense.

Ill be adding to that short list, but all come with the caveat of keeping Romeo Crennel and flushing the Cassel experiment.

Based on what? He got the opportunity to coach Brady, went to Denver and decided that Orton wasn't the answer so he drafted Tim Tebow, then went to St. Louis where they already had a franchise QB in place.

Its been 2 games. Not to mention that I thought Bradford looked great tonight. Stepped up and fired the ball all over the field. He does need to learn to snap the ball quick as hell when a challenge is possible.

The fact that he has been good with quarterbacks is somewhat unquestionable. He is to quarterbacks what Herm was to CBs.

NO WAY I want Josh McDaniels as HC of the Chiefs. He's no HC. He proved that. He's one of these guys IMO that will be a better OC than HC.

Weis might be a better OC than HC as well. But I could live with im as HC.

Having said all that I'm firmly in the Cowher, Gruden, Fisher camp (proven HC) though I don't think one will / can work with Pioli.
