Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

Saw The Kids Are Alright. I liked it. A lot. A whole lot. Though, I must say, it loses points for failing to include any version of it's namesake song on the soundtrack.

Sorry if repost, but I saw this on another board, and thought it was cool.

http://www.theyshootpictures.com/gf1000.htm

This is as definitive of a list of the greatest movies of all time as I've ever found.

"The January 2010 list of the 1,000 Greatest Films of all-time has primarily been compiled by using 2,041 individual critics' and filmmakers' personal lists/ballots of their favourite/best films."

Lists of favorite movies are taken from filmmakers and critics and combined to form this ranking of 1000 top films.

"Narrowed down from a starting list of over 8,800 films, utilizing some rather tricky formulas, we believe that this is quite possibly the most definitive guide to the most-acclaimed movies of all-time. At the very least, it is a rather spiffy place for all budding/established film buffs to commence/enhance their cinematic experiences."

I can always use a new "top" list to find new films to watch.

This one baffles me from the get go though. Citizen Cane makes a lot of "top" lists and I just don't get it. I'm guessing that I've missed something spectacular in that movie when I went to piss.

That film invented deep focus, it invented the FLASHBACK, it first used unreliable pov/memory in movies, I think it invented the montage. Citizen Kane changed filmmaking forever, and the film still holds up IMO.

Even if you don't care about the story of Citizen Kane (to me, it's a bit overwrought), the cinematography is revolutionary. Even the use of camera angles to convey his presence is fantastic.

Man, I think On the Waterfront is way too low at 94 on that.

Historical technical filmmaking significance. If you're looking to be entertained, it isn't a top movie.

Yeah, this ranking certainly differs from my own personal rankings. But I love the objective of their list. I love that it's as "scientific" as one can really hope to get on such a subjective topic.

I feel like, overall, it's probably a pretty fair consensus.

Ever taken a film class? There are a lot of things in there that a casual viewer probably won't appreciate.

First semester freshman year of college I took a history of film class that covered 1900-1946 (or thereabouts). So we started with Great Train Robbery and Nanook of the North and worked our way through Birth of a Nation and Battleship Potemkin, etc.

When we got to Citizen Kane, it was like watching Star Wars. Having seen the gradual development of filmmaking, with moving cameras and editing, Citizen Kane was like dropping the medium into hyperdrive -- it suddenly was light years ahead of its predecessors.

You watch it now, and it looks like any other movie, because all its techniques are so familiar. But at the time it was so bleeding revolutionary. It was breathtaking.

So, uh, yeah, I agree with Hamas.

Still is, IMO. You'd be hard pressed to see any film today that doesn't owe a debt to CK. It's that important. And it's that good.
