daymn...fire at Joyland...probably the final nail
the park has been closed for 2 years.
If I ever won the lottery, I would have loved to buy this and fix it up. maybe it is just nostalgia from my childhood, but I hate to see it gone Firefighters are battling a major building fire at the now-closed Joyland amusement park. The building ablaze is on northwest end of the park. Fire Marshal Ed Bricknell said fire officials are not sure which building is on fire. Firefighters are using an aerial hose to fight the fire. Traffic is not disrupted in the area. Smoke from the fire is visible for several miles. Return to Kansas.com for updates as they become available. The park, a Wichita landmark since 1947, was closed in 2006. The park is at 2801 S. Hillside. http://www.kansas.com/news/breaking/story/768714.html |

Is that the same one as that Western theme one that lasted like 6 months a few years ago?

this one was built in like 1940's and was open until about 2 years ago the original owners were getting pretty old so they leased it to some shady people who ran it down and didn't pay bills ect... it just closed and never re-opened. It has been vandalized several times and now this fire... REALLY sad |

Ditto on the nostalgia. I grew up in Wichita until we moved in 1988. I hadn't heard that they had closed.

My great grandma lived within about a quarter mile of the place, so we would always go over there when we went to visit. Good memories. Too bad the place is rotting away.

It is located in one of the worst areas of town. Those of us that grew up in Doo Dah have fond memories of the place. That said the truth of the matter is the place is a dump and has been for years. Plain View is a crime infested hell hole and someone would be crazy to try and revitalize the place. Sadly its time has come and gone.

Best thing that could have happened to the place. I bet the owners are rejoicing.
The place as been done for years. I do have good memories going there as a kid though. |

The world has moved past the time of the small amusement parks. There are very few in the country still running, most are shopping malls by now.

Well teach them well so they can break the cycle of the neighborhood they live in. That area will continue to digress and helping provide them education to help them move away is the best you can do.
