Overreaction Planet

It took a perfect storm for us to lose by one point to the team with the second best record in the AFC last night. SB teams lose games (almost) every year. We have been hanging around 18% chance to win the SB all year. It will in all likelihood end in disappointment. This was always true.

Bottomline is we weren't as good as some of you thought before this game and we are better than some of you think afterwards. In either case, expect to walk away from this season without a SB victory. Play the long game.

Anything is possible in a single game. We are looking at a cloud of a very few data points and trying to make definitive conclusions from them. It's a fool's errand. Everything should be viewed in terms of probability.

The defensive performance against Cincinnati is probably on the 5% tail of a distribution of outcomes. If we played them at home again I would not expect to hold them to 10.

My viewpoint really hasn't changed. We have a super star QB who can beat any of these other teams, for real. I think we can beat the Steelers or Patriots or Chargers. The problem is I'm not real confident we can string three games like that together against playoff caliber teams. We need the offense to play out of their mind or we need a 2006 Colts situation where Berry coming back lifts this defense and they play better in the playoffs, kind of like Bob Sanders did for the Colts. No one is saying they need to be the 85 Bears, but if Mahomes gives them a double digit lead they have to hold it.

Throwing the ball sideways is practically a run. The first 2 plays were totally predictable and not surprisingly snuffed out. Pretty obvious Reid was playing that 3-down series incredibly safe. Two drives before was safe too. I still remember thinking how uncharacteristic it was for Mahomes to check down short on 3rd down. The only thing feeding the illusion that we were attacking in the 4th quarter was scoring a TD in the 2nd to last drive. But look at the drive chart - all short passes, bailed out a few times by LA penalties. And it isn't just offense... Reid sets the tone for Sutton's safe playcalling in those situations too.

It's not like it's this game in isolation. That last drive has been vintage Reid. In almost every game where we've been behind, we had an outstanding 4th quarter. In half of the games where we've been ahead, we've been borderline terrible on offense in the 4Q (Denver game 2, Jax, AZ, SF, and for the most part... SD). You can call that a coincidence. But history shows that Andy Reid coaches totally different when we have a lead.

Predictable draw play, sideways WR screen... No idea what the 3rd play was, but wouldn't doubt Mahomes was instructed to play it safe if he didn't like what he saw. Clearly the first two plays were scripted.

With 3:49 to go, you put the ball in Mahomes' hands and get a first down or two. THEN you consider burning clock. Giving Mahomes 1 chance instead of 3 means they cared a lot more about burning the clock than they did extending the drive. That's what you call playing not to lose.

He didn't call a WR screen. Reek ran a hitch. The pass was six yards down the field.

They got the yards back from the penalty which is what every NFL team does in that situation.

The OL blew the third down.

Shit, the OL blew first down, too.

Reid isn't at fault here.

People are complaining about a 13 play drive that took nearly 8 minutes and ended with a TD that gave us a 98% chance of winning?? And Reid was calling short passes because Mahomes has constantly been under pressure the last two weeks.

I didn't find anything wrong with Reid's playcalling in the 4th quarter.

Ok, was misremembering. Still, that was a conservative as hell playcall. Almost every receiver on a short route. But yeah, more aggressive than what I remembered. None of what we did the entire 4th quarter was aggressive.

The last drive isn’t on Reid. Players didn’t execute for dick there at the end, especially up front on the line.

You don't even know what the playcall was. It could have had a deep route.

Mahomes just took the decent gain to set up third and not totally unmakeable, because that's what almost every QB does in that situation.

Mahomes has converted enough third and 8s. But he can't do it when Jeff Allen dumps a DT in his lap when his back foot hits.

Maybe Reid should have been MORE conservative and called a screen there, they were killing LAC all night.

I don't buy for a second we ran that drive because we were trying to protect Mahomes. We ran that drive to burn clock. It just happened to work that time (several critical LA penalties helped). It was sandwiched between two 3-and-outs that felt incredibly conservative.

If we don't want to blame Reid for the 4Q, then we have to acknowledge that we have a huge 4Q problem when we hold a lead. We've been consistently outstanding in the 4Q when we're behind. We've been borderline terrible on offense in the 4Q in half of the games where we've held a lead. Is that just a magic coincidence? I don't think it is. It's a pattern we've seen for 6 years under Reid. That 4Q felt very much like Mahomes in handcuffs. And I think he's too good of a QB to need to do that.

Almost all routes were well short. And Mahomes knew where he was going immediately. This feels to me like a play you design for Alex Smith, not Mahomes. It's not terrible, but it seems incredibly safe to me. This was a play to chip away at a makeable 3rd down. It was not a play designed to get us a first down. We basically gave Mahomes one true swing at a first down, and I just think he's too good of a QB to manage a drive this way.

That's wrong. Kelce and Robinson are going down the field there. He could have held the ball and tried something deeper.

He just decided to take the cheap yards.

That's not on Reid at all.
