He survives this without major sanctions, now.

Emmert said on a press conference call that any evidence obtained through these unethical (and illegal by NCAA rules) methods would be thrown out.

Slap on the wrist for the plane stuff is what's coming...

Shapiro's lawyer on NCAA payroll? http://bit.ly/XYt4FV Does this mean Mark Emmert "failed to promote an atmosphere of complaince?"

Funny how their investigations can go on for years... unless they're investigating themselves. That only takes a week or two.

Dafuq?

Just kill yourselves, NCAA.

I think we've really figured out what went on here. Yahoo Sports made the NCAA look like a bunch of incompetent clowns so the NCAA went on a damn witch hunt to show how hard they would be on the offenders....that they ignored on their own.

They couldn't make anything stick, so they just started desperately hunting for anything that might give them grounds to slam somebody.

Get bent, NCAA.

Yeah, it appears the investigation team hired Shapiro's lawyer and asked him to subpoena witnesses the NCAA has no power to subpoena and ask questions they otherwise would not be able to force answers to. If that's where the evidence that was going to be used to nail Haith on unethical conduct was coming from... then the NCAA has nothing to get him on that, because Emmert is already on record as saying that won't be used by them.

Shady as fuck.

Wonder if THIS lead investigator is another Abigail Bentstein (or whatever the name of the woman from the Shabazz Muhammed witch hunt is).

That is not the case. Part of the stuff that stems from the Basketball situation is from emails that stated coaches were paid for travel. Most of the stuff thrown out will be related to the football stuff from the way it sounds.

An embarrassing day for the NCAA is a good day for Missouri's Frank Haith

By Gary Parrish | College Basketball Insider
January 23, 2013 3:03 pm ET

NCAA president Mark Emmert said Wednesday that his organization is investigating itself for "improper conduct" related to its investigation of Miami, and that sound of celebration you hear coming from Missouri must be originating in Frank Haith's office.

Seriously, who's happier than Frank Haith?

Take that man's coaching career off life-support, ASAP.

CBSSports.com's Jeff Goodman reported Monday that the NCAA was "expected" to charge the former Miami/current Missouri coach with "unethical conduct and failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance," which would've almost certainly led to a show-cause penalty that would've essentially forced Missouri to remove Haith, at some point. But now that's very much up in the air because this development -- i.e., that the NCAA had Nevin Shapiro's attorney on payroll (on payroll!!!) and used that attorney to improperly obtain information to aid its investigation -- is a game-changer for all involved.

Miami's notice of allegations is consequently on hold.

Emmert said any information obtained improperly will be "thrown out."

So even if Haith did everything the NCAA was prepared to allege he did -- and it should be noted that Haith has forever denied wrongdoing -- it's now reasonable to assume any charges will be toned down or dropped completely given that the NCAA likely has no desire to get involved in the lawsuit that would come from derailing a man's multimillion-dollar career after an investigation that the NCAA itself has publicly acknowledged was improper on some level. Bottom line, Haith is suddenly and unbelievably in a position to beat this case on a technicality the same way Major League Baseball star Ryan Braun beat his positive drug test on a technicality, which means the idea of Haith coaching Missouri long into the future doesn't seem nearly as unlikely as it did earlier in the week.

Yeah. Apparently, they have SOMETHING beyond the testimony of Shapiro's mom that Haith funneled basketball money through coaches and to Shapiro (at least, I think that's what Goodman's story the other day said - it was unclear on WHAT the NCAA didn't believe from Haith's side of things).

If they picked up check trails they're using as evidence based on questions asked by Shapiro's attorney (which seems possible at this point, since the evidence supposedly came from the bankruptcy hearings, that stuff is out.

I think this stuff is still in play..

The unethical conduct charge against Haith stems from allegations that payments he made to his assistants for basketball camps ended up being paid to Shapiro, CBSSports.com reported. The NCAA’s claim against Haith of failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance arose from airline travel his staff gave to two players’ families, as well as allowing contact between Shapiro and players during recruiting trips, according to the report.

Current Hurricane seniors Reggie Johnson and Durand Scott were suspended last season, reportedly for accepting improper travel benefits.

That may stick, but it's no big deal. He isn't getting a show cause over that.
