The 6.0 DSL service could hypothetically get up to...well...6.0 Mbps (where yours is 2.9). In reality, DSL has a lot of overhead, so anything above 4.5 or so should be acceptable. If you keep doing the test and your speed never seems to breach that 3.0 mark, there may be something wrong. If that's the case, you may want to check out this forum. It's a direct forum to SBC's "tier 2" technicians. They should get you fixed up in a day or two. |

Yeah, that's pretty low for the 6.0 service. It takes a week or so to get it running - how long ago did you order it?
For the basis of comparison, I'm on the 6.0 plan: dslreports.com speed test result on 2006-07-19 09:33:36 EST: 4689 / 605 Your download speed : 4689 kbps or 586.1 KB/sec. That is 102.8% better than an average user on swbell.net Your upload speed : 605 kbps or 75.7 KB/sec. That is 33.5% better than an average user on swbell.net |

As I mentioned, I'd post over in the SBC direct forums if it has been a while. I had to do that when they upgraded me from the 3.0 plan, but after they worked on it the speeds went right up. There's something screwy on their end.
Technical explanation: There are two components that determine your speed with DSL. First, there is a sync speed which is basically how fast your modem is linked up with their modem. Think of it like a water pipe. You used to have a 3-inch diameter pipe, now you have a 6-inch. However, there's also a file (called a redback profile) on their servers that tell their system how fast to send information through that pipe. Think of it like a message on how far to turn up the water faucet so that it doesn't overload the pipe. If that message doesn't get turned up, the pipe can be 100 inches wide and your speeds won't increase. SBC has completely ****ed up this recent upgrade because most users have had their sync speeds upgraded, but the profile on the server is never reset to start sending information at higher speeds. Post your problem and your phone number over in the SBC Direct forum and they should be able to reset it for you. I bet you'll be as good as new then. You are also welcome to try and call SBC's tech support about it, but the first tech you talk to will be NO HELP at all. You have to get through to a "tier 2" technician. The tier 1 techs are just reading a script, and getting them to transfer you can be a pain. If you do get through, just mention that you think your redback profile needs rebuilt and they should be able to take care of it in 5 minutes or so. |

The last 2 days it has been slow, very slow, like dial up or even worst. I called BellSouth, they claimed they were working in the area for DSL customers, problem should be fixed by 6:00 pm yesterday.
At 10:00 PM last night, I had my belly full of theis shit, I called them back. They told the repairs were made.I told them my problem still excisted. Thru there testing, we ended up reseting the modem....... Presto, fast service. I haven't see this stuff before on my pc........ Problem fixed ! Hold on a bit here...... that lasted for 20 minutes....... started getting slow again. I got pissed , turned it off , went to bed. This AM, it's faster, but not the 6.0 I'm paying for, matter of fact, it's not as fast as it was after we reset the modem last night. Should I reset it again ? I did move it around last night, putting all the lines, router, and firewall back in place after the reset .

Tough call. Depending on what modem you have, you might be able to connect to your modem to see what speeds it's syncing at. If the sync speeds are OK, then the problem shouldn't be on your end.
Try this: 1. Go to start and then run. 2. Type "cmd" without the quotes and hit OK. 3. At the command prompt, type "ipconfig" without the quotes. 4. Look at the "Default Gateway" line and remember that number (or write it down). 5. Open up your web browser and type that number with http:// in front of it in your address bar. For example, mine would be http://192.168.1.1 6. If this takes you somewhere, just look around to see if you can find something related to the speed. If your sync speeds are right, they should be 6016 downstream and 768 upstream. Sorry I can't be more specific. Every modem's a little different, so you may not even be able to get into it. |
