Setting up my son's iPod Touch

Ok, so a generous co-worker gave me his old, 2nd generation iPod Touch to give to my son for his 13th birthday.

My question is, how do I get the music that he already has under my wife's iTunes account over to his iPod? Do I set up a new user account? Ideas?

Is her music saved in the iCloud? Just log into the iPod with her account and restore from the cloud.

But your probably better off in the long run creating him his own AppleID/account.

Plug the iPod into your computer and launch iTunes. Restore the iPod to its original settings. Once that's complete, sync it with your iTunes account.

Finito.

Are you wanting your son's iPod to always be synced with your wife's iTunes account? He'll have to use her account for everything, like buying apps and games. If that's what you want, then follow Dane's advice. Otherwise you'll have to export the music from iTunes, and import it into your son's iTunes account. It's much more complicated, but it would let him have his own account, music, and apps. If that's the final goal, you might want to bite the bullet and do the complicated method now and get it over with...

Yeah, this. My wife currently has all his music on her account. I'm wondering if it's time to give him his own account. So while I could reset the settings and move them all over, it would make it impossible for her to keep her stuff I guess.

Is it on a cloud or on her computer?

Then it really doesn't matter if it's her ID or his ID. Each iPod can be synced to up to five different computers.

Just download new music and sync. It's on your computer so it doesn't matter.

No, you can export all his music without disrupting her iTunes account. Then copy your son's music to his own folder, and sync it with his iTunes account. Might not be 100% legal mind you, in case that makes a difference. If not, read on...

Go to the computer that the wife's music is synced to. Where her iTunes music library is.

Download Sharepod: http://sharepod.soft32.com/free-download

Run it and have it export the iTunes library, or his music in particular. It will export the music to a normal folder of your choosing. It might take a while if the library is large.

Create a new iTunes account for your son. If you want to let him buy apps, I suggest just getting an iTunes gift card as opposed to connecting a credit card to his iTunes account. You can then directly control what he spends. Get another card when needed. Sync his iPod with his iTunes account. Then you can either configure the existing iTunes that your wife uses, to manage multiple accounts(Read here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1495), or install iTunes on his own computer if he has one.

Once he has an iTunes account, tell iTunes to scan the folder where you copied his music to. He'll then be setup with his own account, the ability to purchase a set amount of your choosing, and have his own media library.

Let me know if you have any questions implementing it.....

If the music is saved on a hard drive, and not just in an iTunes library itself, then this is possible. Meaning if the music files were acquired outside of iTunes... If the music he's wanting was purchased through iTunes using his wife's iTunes account, then this isn't possible. Music purchased through iTunes can only be accessible by the account that purchased it. It can be shared across the network with other devices, but that's not what he's wanting..

The workaround is to burn it to a CD, copy it to the hard drive, then add it to your iTunes library.

Personally, I've never bought anything through the iTunes store because I hate the sound of 128 AAC.

EDIT

I thought itunes stopped doing 128 AAC and went to 256 with no DRM
