Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid made a surprising declaration on Tuesday afternoon.

The Chiefs are still a little more than two months away from the start of training camp in St. Joe’s, but we already have some very interesting news on the depth chart front.

Reid has proclaimed that Tyler Bray, not Aaron Murray or Kevin Hogan, is entering training camp as the primary backup quarterback to Alex Smith. Murray was a fifth-round pick back in 2014 while Hogan was a fifth-round selection in April.

Despite being an undrafted free agent in 2013, Bray has stuck on the roster but never appeared or been active for a game in the regular season. He was placed on injured reserve last year after sustaining a torn ACL in a pickup basketball game.

Bray has all the physical tools you could want. He’s 6-foot-6 and 215 pounds and at 24 years old, might finally be seizing the moment after sitting behind Chase Daniel and Murray.

It will be fascinating to see if Bray can hold off Murray and Hogan in camp, not having thrown a competitive pass in two years.

If he has not been impressing them in some way why even give him a chance since they have so little invested in him and so much more in others at the same position?

With the limited amount of practice time they have now paired with the inexperience they 3 potential backups, someone needs to get reps. I'm glad it's a competition though, that's the best way to find a guy

I think those depth position mean something always. I don't think they would say you know what lets just give it to Bray so we can find out what we should really already know. If they are doing that then it would seem that they haven't been doing a good enough job.
They didn't have to release information like this to find out whether Bray is going to be able to make the team or if they are going to cut him.

I think this is pretty exciting (no matter how much Dane wants to poop on it). It should be fun to see if all this time on the bench has allowed Bray to learn what is needed and if he can put it to use on the field. No one can discount his raw physical abilities.

He may not make it out of camp but I am glad that he will get a solid shot at finally being able to show what he has at this point. I am still amazed at how young he is.

It's silly to think this doesn't mean anything. Maybe they are getting ready to showcase bray and shop him. Maybe he legitimately is better than Murray. Personally, I don't believe for one second that bray was injured. He was stashed on IR while he developed.

The one thing I do know is that Andy Reid specifically mentioned this, and I don't think he's in the habit of arbitrarily doling out info. If he said it, he has a reason imo.

They obviously see something there. When they signed him to a two year extension this offseason I was wondering what was up. If he hadn't been picking this thing up in the classroom then he'd be way off the roster by now. So obviously he's learned the offense and has done well in the QB room for them to extend him and then put him at #2. That doesn't mean anything other than they think his ceiling is higher than the other guys, and they want him to try and take the job. It all comes down to staying healthy and making plays on the field obviously. Should make preseason fun...

It would be awesome for Bray to keep the #2 spot. I would assume that they would probably try and get Hogan on the PS and keep Murray as the #2.

Could be? By declaring him as a number 2- that kind of sets the compensation value would it not?

Big difference from shopping a practice squad QB that was injured playing a pickup game of basketball.

All the titles in the world won't mean anything if he sucks in the preseason games.
