If we don't get a number one receiver soon, I am gonna go mad!

I think, next year, the team needs are WR, DT, OL, DE, QB, FB, S in that order. Honestly, I don't care if they come from FA or the draft. However, I do think the WR and DT need to start and make in impact in '06. The others can just be contributors in '06 and starters in '07 and/or '08.

FA should be the target position wish list to get either
WR- Charles Rogers DE- John Abraham DT- Larry Tripplett The draft should always consist of getting the BAA, and this draft the deepest position is OT. The position KC is in the Chiefs could get a damn good one Marcus McNeill or Jon Scott.

1) Darren Howard or John Abraham (DEs).
2) Cletidus Hunt (DT). 3) Wendell Bryant (DT) (at the league minimum to see if he play up to his potential in camp). 4) Joey Harrington. 5) Chester Taylor to backup LJ if Priest retires. 5) Draft OT in first round. 6) Draft CB in 2nd round. Kennison and Parker, while not top 10 WRs, are good enough if LJ is running like he is running now. I'd promote Thorpe and McIntyre next year and cut Boerigter and Horn. Thorpe and McIntyre have the potential to be much, much more explosive than those 2 guys. That's what I would do. |

Just say NO to John Abraham. We can't play him at left end and Jared Allen is the right end.

Receivers are a dime a dozen and finding one to come in and play is rarely a problem. Most of the receivers on any roster or even practice squad in this league can become "stars" in the fans eyes as long as they're thrown the ball. There are almost always former numbers ones available in free agency every year dirt cheap.
Finding someone to get the ball to the receiver, and more importantly, protecting that someone long enough so that he can get the ball downfield, are both more difficult. Neither of those are immediate problems for the Chiefs unless Roaf retires. Welbourn should slide back to right guard and play at an all pro level. That's if they can get him re-signed. I'm not sure that his contract is up but I've heard reference to it. Sampson looked good at right tackle when he played. I've heard rumors the Chiefs will try to pursue big John Runyan at right tackle but I don't see where that money's gonna come from and if it does come up I'd save it and spend it elsewhere. Considering the Chiefs have 2 receivers closing in on 1000 yards for the 2nd consecutive year and they've ranked first or 2nd in offense the last 4 years and did this without a so-called "number one receiver", I don't see any problems there either - especially considering the defense is still #28 or worse. It would be nice to have a good young left tackle come in for a year so that he can take over for Roaf. It would also be nice to have a talented and fairly cheap young qb come in for a couple of years so that he can eventually take over for Green at QB. Harrington and Ramsey come to mind there and there will surely be more people on that list in the coming months. Problems do exist at practically every position along the defense. DT really can't be a priority now because Sims has shown too many flashes and cutting Jr. and bringing in someone like Kimeatua(sp?) from the Ravens, although appealing in my eyes, will be difficult because cutting Jr. would be hard on the cap. Dalton doesnt produce a lot of stats but has held up at the nose tackle postion. He's a FA this offseason. Browning is a FA. Hicks is also a FA and I don't think will be re-signed. The Chiefs need another defensive end that can stop the run and get to the quarterback. Abraham is too small to play opposite Allen...Darren Howard comes to mind but he's gonna be expensive and the Chiefs are already in a pretty bad place with the cap next year. Carlos Hall is also free agent this offseason. MLB and LOLB are strengths but ROLB will have to be placed in the hands of Key Fox or Kris Griffin. Bell is due too much money for what he's produced and should be cut. CB is still a weakness. Both of them are 30. Warfield is due to make a lot of money next year and hasn't looked really good. I say it's a weakness because considering the Chiefs have 2 thirty year old cornerbacks they have little in the way of young developing talent on the roster at the position. Hodge has yet to get a snap on defense in an NFL game and is a 5th round pick who never had an Int. in college. Sapp looks good against the run but not in coverage. At SS Knight is getting older and slower and suffers in coverage. Wesley is Wesley. Sooner or later Bartee's gonna have to get a shot at a safety position. Upgrades at either of those positions would be welcome. Now consider that LJ is the most underpaid player at his position in the league and probably will and should hold out if he doesn't get a better contract. Ditto Brian Waters and Jared Allen. Getting those guys re-signed should take priority over anything else. But once they are re-signed I don't think there will be any money left over for anything else. That basically means no free agents at DT, DE, OT, or secondary. From where I sit I'd be happy if the Chiefs are able to come out of this offseason without losing anybody of major importance.

Too many "if's" right now for me to analyze.
If Roaf and Shields stay one more year... Who are our UFAs and RFAs... Greatest need right now and for next season? Undoubtedly DT. The entire defense is founded on the push in the middle, and we have NONE. Develop Sims and Dalton? FA or draft? I think you waste FA money on a DT; it's not a skill position like DE, so you can draft a stud and start him the same year. So until the waters clear up a bit concerning coaches, Roaf, and Shields, I'm saying DT.

Build defense, particularly through the draft.
That his how you put together a championship type of team. We have to continue building our defense up. If we bring in any FAs, ensure they're not 30-plus. Our LB core, at least on paper, is a real strength. Hopefully we'll get to see them all next year - healthy. But we have to improve our D-line and secondary. Look at San Diego and what they've been able to do up front, and look at some of the results. |

We basically need an DE and a DT more than anything. The way the draft is it would be smarter to sign a DE and draft a DT. But the thing is after the amount of money the Chiefs spent last year, are they gonna wanna drop big money on a Darren Howard?

We don't want Darren Howard. He's getting older, he's way too expensive (and not worth it) and he's coming off some injury problems, albeit minor ones.
Draft > free agency. Just not under Vermeil. Hopefully a new coach will sort that out. |
