Another bust

Losing for draft picks

For the last couple of years there has been a growing majority hoping the Chiefs would lose games in hopes of getting better draft picks. I bought in. How's that working for you? You knew Carl would be doing the drafting the last couple of years.

Albert was a trade, not a result of losing. Allen was out the door.

Now the "Patriot way" is another dagger in that fallacy. THey don't care for high first rounders and trading out of it is rough sledding.

Is it time for "Lets hope we lose so we get better players" is laid to rest?

edit: This is not about Jackson. The premise as a whole.

Who are you talking about specifically? Pretty much the majority of Herms picks we're bust save a handful that are still on the team. 1 Game is certainly not enough to call any of the recent draft class a bust.

When people were hoping for bad play during game threads last season, they didn't know Carl would be gone. Hoped for it, but to say they knew for sure would be a lie.

edit: Carl's firing was announced after the SD loss. There were 2 games left, Miami and Cincy.

Unless there's a Peyton Manning type franchise player sitting there in the draft, it doesn't pay (except the player and agent) to draft high and put your franchise in cap hell. All this could and might be remedied with a rook salary cap as part of the next CBA but there will be a fight of sorts before that happens.

Interesting to note that the majority of the players, the vets, want a rook salary cap so more of those $$$ can filter down to them so, for that main reason, look for the movement to gain traction. At present, a team is better off drafting lower unless of course, there are genuine can't miss types at the top of the draft.

How often does that happen, you ask? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I'd say the beauty is there at the top only so often, like good vintage wines.

The problem with that logic is that you don't know who the Mannings are and who the Leafs are when you're drafting them. Manning wasn't a consensus no. 1 pick either (link below), so even in that year there wasn't a "sure" thing.

Last year, I was one of those wishing for the top spot, but since we traded for our QB, I, now, realize we would have been better off a little further back in the pack. Jackson would have still been there and at a better price ... and just maybe Pioli could have been able to trade down and still gotten his man, since most were projecting him at the bottom of the round. A few teams have drafted at the top for years and still show little improvement.

But, just hit me ... not sure how our drafting high affected the other rounds of the draft when price was more even???

Therefore, this year I'm hoping for some wins to begin to build this team!!!

BTW .. I hope they get that NBA type of rookie salary slotting ... so teams don't over pay for busts, and so those diamonds in the rough can get paid better/faster.

You said it well!!! One really never knows!

But, a team that does find a Manning or an Elway (sure hate to even type that), etc. it makes winning a SB that much easier or makes being competitive easier. Yes, the team has to be built around them and have good coaching. So, if you find one ... it's worth the risk.

But, "does the man make the clothes or the clothes make the man" kinda of a thing. I mean B.B. is given credit for maybe the best coach in history ... but, where would he be without Brady? The guy not only has talent but has the winning attitude. So, if Bledso (sp?) had never been hurt would it have been another Cleveland for him??? And, Elway was a great QB for year, but didn't wear a ring until Shanny came along. So, it's all got to fit together.

BTW ... I think Ely is not in the "great" category.

Summary ... I hope we win games this year. Unless Cassell truly stinks it up or gets hurt, Pioli will not draft a franchise QB ... even if the consensuses greatest of all times (yeah, I know ... HMc is correct) is sitting there when we draft. Pioli will draft for need and call it the Pat... ooopppsss ... Chiefs way!!! I think we can get that player about the middle of the pack, an winning will be fun!!

It's definitely time to start getting some wins. We've been drafting high for awhile now. Now we have to see those picks develop fruit. I'm never one to hope for a shitty record so we can get good draft picks, to me that ends up making you the Detroit Lions. It's time to start improving every week, get some wins, draft wherever you draft and just keep getting better.

I hope this season shows promise by the end. We're not going to win the division, but we could very well be 2nd and have some success against our own division. I'm really ready for some friggin' wins...screw the draft. Just win baby!

This one's for Hootie!

Seriously. The Pats, Steelers, Colts, Ravens, Eagles, ect this decade. It's all about management and coaching. Losing for draft picks is for mocks.
