What's your favorite wine?

For us wine drinkers, I'm curious about your favorite "drinking" wine (as in, something uner $15 a bottle).

I'm partial to the 2002 Hill of Gold Shiraz (Rosemont Estates) and the 2002 Coppola Premium Claret. Right now, I'm drinking a 2003 Coppola Zin.

As pictured , look for the pigeon feces and you'll find this old bird. As soon as you taste this swill, it will be obvious that its makers cut every corner possible in its production to make it cheap. Self-proclaimed as "The American Classic," Thuderbird is Vinted and bottled by E&J Gallo Winery, in in Modesto, CA. Disguised like Night Train, the label says that it is made by "Thunderbird, Ltd." If your taste buds are shot, and you need to get trashed with a quickness, then "T-bird" is the drink for you. Or, if you like to smell your hand after pumping gas, look no further than Thunderbird. As you drink on, the bird soars higher while you sink lower. The undisputed leader of the five in foulness of flavor, we highly discourage driking this ghastly mixture of unknown chemicals unless you really are a bum. A convenience store clerk in Show Low, AZ once told me that only the oldest of stumbling indian drunks from the reservation buy Thunderbird. Avaliable in 750 mL and a devastating 50 oz jug.

The history of Thunderbird is as interesting as the drunken effects the one experiences from the wine. When Prohibition ended, Ernest Gallo and his brothers Julio and Joe wanted to corner the young wine market. Earnest wanted the company to become "the Campbell Soup company of the wine industry" so he started selling Thunderbird in the ghettos around the country. Their radio adds featured a song that sang, "What's the word? / Thunderbird / How's it sold? / Good and cold / What's the jive? / Bird's alive / What's the price? / Thirty twice." It is said that Ernest once drove through a tough, inner city neighborhood and pulled over when he saw a bum. When Gallo rolled down his window and called out, "What's the word?" the immediate answer from the bum was, "Thunderbird."

This does not fit into the everyday wine category, but the wife and I had a bottle of Michael David's Inkblot Cabernet Verdot. It's a $40 bottle, which is twice what I generally spend, but ohmygod was it good. Just a really big, bold, dry cab varietal, and "inky" is a very good word to describe it. Just outstanding. I'm a big fan of Michael David Wines, as their Earthquake line is another of my absolute favorites.

I'll have to give it a try. My favorite is really any cab from Nickel and Nickel, but they're hard to find and typically run $100+ per bottle, so it's more of a special occasion thing.

It's dry, but fruit forward, jammy. They make a Petit Verdot I'll have to try next.

Cool, I've seen that around, but haven't tried it yet. We had a local pharmacy/liquor store that was recently purchased by Walgreens that had some '05 Opus One in stock. They have it for sale for $160, the cheapest I can find it online is $340.

Is it illegal for me to buy it and resale on EBAY? I think I could buy their remaining bottles for $140 each, sell most and then have the rest at no charge.

I say go for it. That's quite a profit. I think you might have to look at where you'd be shipping it, as I'm not sure if they'd consider internet sales of alcohol in dry counties bootlegging or not...

I'm not wine snobby enough to know the names of them. I like most Cabs, some Pinot noir, and some zins. I'm kind of a two glass with a killer dinner kind of guy but don't drink it all that often

Not a big wine drinker, but tried a malbec a little while back and it was pretty delicious... someone suggested Alamos (iirc), which I found for $10... haven't tried it though.

Wine for alcoholics

I've found a decent non-alcoholic wine called Fre. You can get it at Albertson's, Fred Meyer and Kroger. The chardonnay is drinkable. The rest is not. But it helps me because wine and beer were my downfall. For beer, I've found St. Pauli is very good. Tastes like real beer. Just no buzz. The no buzz part is another long story. But I'm making it - four months sober!

The wife and I really like to go to Mt. Vernon, Mo and visit the Williams Creek Winery. They have really good Catawba. Most of their wine is around $9.50 a bottle.

Wife and I go to Eureka Springs every year for our anniversary. we don't do wine much. but this time in Eureka we stopped at Keels winery for a tasting. of the 8 or so we tried only one was sweet....and even it wasn't really sweet. bunch of drys. I really really didn't like any of them. I've rarely had a wine that I've said...wow that's good....unless...don't laugh...it's my moms! she makes some good stuff. very sweet.

I don't understand how people can dig dry wine. does it grow on you over time or what??

You can definitely develop a taste for the dryer wines. The dry wine produced in the Ozarks is vastly different than the dry wine produced in Oregon/California. I think there is a bigger taste variance between cranberry juice and apple juice than a Cabernet and a Norton.

BTW, that Rosemont Estates Shiraz in the OP is still a good drinking wine (newer vintages, of course).

A big fan of BV CAB/SYR Maestro Collection as of late. As for a nice table wine Earthquake out of the Lodi region.
