Fort Hood Shooting: Reports of Shots Fired at Texas Army Base; Shooter at Large Wednesday

By Jack Phillips, Epoch Times | April 2, 2014 | Last Updated: April 2, 2014 6:32 pm

An active shooter at Fort Hood, Texas, has left several people injured, according to reports on Wednesday.

An active shooter at Fort Hood, Texas, has left several people injured and one person has died, according to reports on Wednesday. The base was placed on lockdown and employees were asked to shelter in place.

Reports came in starting at around 5:40 p.m. ET.

The suspect is still at large, reported KCEN-TV.

There are several injuries reported from the incident, the station said, adding that the people were shot inside of a medical building. One of the victims is said to have a chest wound.

KWTX reported that eyewitnesses heard about 20 gunshots on the base. The station also said one victim was killed.

The shooter is said to be in the Medical Brigade Building, or building 33026, KCEN reported. Killeen Police are still searching for a suspect.

Ryan Wood, a reporter with WFAA-TV in Dallas, reported that there was an incident at Fort Hood.

Wood tweeted that police are on the scene.

Announcements are being sent out on the base’s post, KCEN reported.

Austin-based KEYE-TV, citing Fort Hood officials, also confirmed there was a shooting on the base.

In 2009, Nidal Malik Hasan, a U.S. Army major and psychiatrist, admitted to shooting and killing 13 people at Fort Hood. Officials described the event–which was the worst shooting on a U.S. military base in history–as a terrorist incident.

This week, the FBI and the U.S. Army have been searching for a recent Army recruit believed to be planning a “Fort Hood-inspired jihad against U.S. soldiers.”

The recruit, Booker, is also known as Muhammad Abdullah Hassan. There’s no confirmed link to the shooting tonight on the base.

But Law enforcement sources contacted by Fox said that it appeared that there may be others in addition to Booker who also might have expressed similar intentions to commit jihad against U.S. military installations.

AP update – Sheriff’s office: Fort Hood reports active shooter

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — Fort Hood has reported an active shooter to local authorities.

Bell County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Donnie Adams says the sheriff’s office dispatched deputies and troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety to the nearby Texas Army base.

Fort Hood ordered everyone at the base to “shelter in place.” The order was sent Wednesday on the base’s Twitter feed and posted on its Facebook page.

The 1st Calvary Division, which is based at Fort Hood, sent a Twitter alert telling people on base to close doors and stay away from windows.

A spokeswoman for the base declined to comment.

The base was the scene of a mass shooting in 2009. Thirteen people were killed and more than 30 wounded.
