If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.
A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.
So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way. A bright GM with a good measure of luck can find a franchise QB and develop him with the right head coach. But it sure is difficult to do after the first round. Exceedingly difficult to do. |

-I don't want to get too far down in the draft position because my point is this: YES, 1st round QBs have won the SB over half of the time. However, not necessarily for the team that drafted them. In fact, of all the SB winning QB's, there are a LOT of them that won it on team two. |

We shared a stage in Vegas back in 2001. Ah, to be back on the stage with Cynthia Brimhall...

When the 49ers lost the 2011 NFCC game to the Giants, many fans screamed impatience. "We've been losing for 10 years! When do we win the super bowl????" You don't turn around on a dime. But hey, if you want to settle for mediocrity for the prices of 2 2nd round draft picks and mid-round picks next year, that is your business. You must be thrilled. The stat that 1st overall picks wining 30%+ super bowls applies to equally to Jamarcus Russell and David Carr as it does to Alex Smith. How would you like David Carr to lead your team? That was a ridiculous comment. |

This is a completely new team with Pro bowlers on D and a huge Oline- plus talent like Bowe and Charles. It is going to be a fun year- the Chiefs are back!! |

1. We gave up a couple of picks so we are going to suck for years over it-LOL So the Chiefs can't Trade down next year if there is someone there (a QB) they want-???? 2. Alex Smith is the worst QB to ever play and we are doomed as long as he is on the team. Hunt, Reid and Dorsey are gambling away our future and have No idea how to evaluate the QB position. 3. Cassel sucked so Smith will too. 4. Chiefs will suck this year because they have in the past. Even if they do manage to win a Playoff spot- they will still suck because they lose draft position next year. 5. It is better to continue to be national laughing stocks and go 2 -14 again in hopes of drafting a QB next year- then actually try to win now. 6. Even though Hunt has left no stone unturned by getting the absolute Best available at every spot all the way from GM, Head Coach, staff, consultants, QB and in the draft (they hope) he wants to just go 8-8 to make a few bucks next year. 7. Past stats will show exactly what a QB will do the next year or the following years. No QB in NFL history has been average on one team but turned their career around with a new team. The list could go on- but there is no way to convince negative people that anything good could or will happen. The Chiefs suck, the coach sucks, Alex sucks woa is me the whole team is a joke, blah blah blah. What a bunch of negative Eeyores. |

But my objection - and that of many others - is pretty simple. That 'best available QB' is still only the 15th-20th best starting QB in the league. They gave up a lot to get him, which will make it harder (not impossible, but harder) to get a franchise QB in the draft, especially considering the organization is acting like it has found its guy and might not even try until/unless Alex Smith proves he is not the guy. Hypothetical: Let's say the Chiefs flip things around, end up 10-6 and lose in the first round of the playoffs. In that playoff game, Alex Smith is horrid on third down and the Chiefs struggle to put points on the board against a playoff-caliber defense, leading to a loss in which the Chiefs are dominated and never really are in the game. That might be a fun season. But would you consider that outcome building towards a better future (with Alex Smith at the helm)?

For a 54 year old man you certainly act like a child. I'm not whoever it is you think I am, I do however know that you are Harbernick from the 49ers forum because what other 50+ year old person would act as stupid and annoying as you do on both sites. You dedicate a fan club to Kaepernick and exclaim over and over how tired you are of hearing about Alex Smith, yet you have over 260 posts over here talking and arguing about Alex Smith. Do you understand how your actions contradict everything you say? I'm sure you will just continue to say that I am this other poster that you know because it serves your argument, it's the internet equivalent of a little kid putting his hands over his ears and proclaiming "I can't hear you, I can't hear you," despite the fact the mod flat out said in another thread after you posted something about IP addresses that they had several ways beyond IP addresses to identify multiple accounts and these were not multiple accounts. I really wish you had something better to do with your life old man so every time I wanted to casually read something about the Niners or Chiefs to waste time in class I wouldn't have to see your garbage.

I would not give up high picks for anybody who is mediocre at their position. All of the analysts were surprised at the compensation paid for Alex. I'm well aware that starting caliber QBs are few & far between and you have to pay to play. IMHO, if you are that good a team, then you bulk up and prepare to wreck your division for years when you finally get your franchise QB. I knew the Chiefs were not in complete rebuilding mode or they never would have traded for Alex. But trading high picks for temporary 10 win seasons only to be hurt Who did you lose out on with pick #34 gone this year? A lot of value slipped much further than that. Tell me that you couldn't use that #34 pick in the draft this year for strong starter at a need for the next decade? |
