ruger 10/22 scope problems/questions
My grandpa bought a new ruger 10/22 a year or two ago for plinking. His eyes aren't great, so he is using a 3-7x 32mm scope. Standard 1 inch tube diameter. I think it came with the rifle, but maybe not.
The problem is that as he fires, the scope shifts. We have both tightened the screws down as far as we dare with the same result. I've also noticed slight gouging on the scope mounting base. I have a marlin model 60 with the same clamp type scope mounts, never had this problem. My questions are: Has anyone else had this problem with this rifle? Do you suspect the problem is with the mounting base or with the mounts? On a related note, he wants to get a bigger (3-9x, 40mm) scope. I'm not sure if the mounting base rides high enough to accommodate the bigger scope without bottoming out on the top of the barrel. I found this (below) and think it looks a little more sturdy than the clamp style mounts. But again, I haven't ever had a problem with mine. http://www.amazon.com/Warne-Scope-Mo...ef=pd_sim_sg_7 Any help is appreciated, I think getting this problem fixed would be a good christmas present. |

Is the gouging on the Rail that you attach to the 10/22 receiver, or are you referring to a base that attached to that rail?
The mount that you have linked should hold the scope tight enough not to shift. On a side note make sure that on the screws that you use to attach the rail to the receiver you use a threadlocking compound to ensure that they don't back out and loosen up the whole assembly. |

I'm not sure what you mean by "clamp style mount" but the link you posted is exactly the type of scope mount I've always used without issue.

As for the 40mm scope, you should be able to mount that without too much difficulty.

Vs. the style pictured in the link (op). this is what is slipping, not the scope within the mount. Sorry for the confusion, stupid neighbor wouldn't shut up. |

I never had any luck with the rail that comes with the 10/22. It was too damn wobbly with the scope and rings mounted. I ended using a DNZ Game Reaper instead. I highly recommend it. Its a little expensive, but its a quality mount.

how wide is your rail? If it's 9mm or less you are screwed. If it's a little wider than 9mm then you still might be screwed (I'm assuming the above pic is showing the tightest the it can go is 9mm and the widest is 12mm). Even if it's like 10mm wide, it appears that way those brackets work (from the looks of it) that you could possibly damage your rail by tightening it too much?

I had these mounts on a Simmons scope for my 10/22 growing up, and they never let me down through thousands of rounds. You can still use your iron sights for quick shooting, too. |
