Kansas City barbeque

http://economy.kansascity.com/?q=node/2070

New Orleans has its gumbo. Philadelphia has its cheesesteaks. Boston its seafood. And Kansas City’s culinary claim to fame? Barbecue of course!

And what barbecue, around 80 operations to choose from — spicy to sweet, bare bones dive to white tablecloth, heart of the city or afternoon drive in the country.

Here is the current list of establishments in and around KC. But barbecue fans beware, call ahead first to make sure they are open.
Got changes, additions or BBQ news? Send them to Joyce Smith at jsmith@kcstar.com

But its worth it. Got the jumbo pulled pork and the best fries I've had in the world. Took a slab of ribs, 1lb of brisket and a 1/2 lb of pulled pork home for dinner. Take it home cold from OK Joes and heat it up in the oven and you get to have some of the best if not the best BBQ on the planet.

I haven't been to all, been years since AB's - I DO like Zarda, but they're inconsistent. Gates is the best I've had off of the list, and they do it right far more than wrong. I stay simple w/ ham and beef on Wonder bread, something about BBQ ham just really does if for me.

I've moved from pussy heaven and literally rode north on P'Tree Street about six mis. I'm in a town known as Chamblee Ga. Pig & Chick as well as the 'Old Brick Pit' are right around the corner, Old Brick Pit is pure garbage.

Georgia has absolutely no clue how to BBQ.

I live 5 minutes away from OK Joes. Grab some and take it back home for lunch pretty often. Most times when I'm wanting some, I'll take a late lunch break around 1:30 or 2:00. Usually no line then. Z-man and fries...

And Rosedale disc golf course is just a few blocks north. Grab some good BBQ and work it off with a nice round of disc golf.

Bliss..

The inability to duplicate superior food in other locations may be why only have regional BBQ joints and no nationwide "McDonald's" type chain of BBQ shacks exist.

They all cook a LOT of BBQ everyday, and it's all good, but I prefer local "friendly" competitions... We only meet-up a couple of times a year, but it's amazing food. That being said, those places listed are the ones I find have consistently great BBQ. Oklahoma Joe's is good, but way too far away for me to go to on a regular basis, so I'm not dissing them, just going to something closer..

I used to agree with this and then I went to OK Joes. The three on your list are pretty interchangeable IMO. The gap between OK Joes and anyone else is very wide.

Jack Stack is more Q-cuisine, than 'in your face' smoked meats and messy Q.

I don't think it's an even battle-field while comparing JS to the Gates and AB's. Just an entirely different institution.

While grading out, I think JackStack belongs on the steakhouse 'full of atmosphere' report card, NOT in w/ the KC's own BBQ mainstays.
