I couldn't be in radio if I had to play songs I didn't like or not play all the songs I want to listen too lol.

The labels release singles in order to promote albums. It's like a taste of the whole thing. They almost never send us whole albums and over the last decade or so they've almost completely stopped sending giveaway albums. The charts are made up of the most popular singles. That's how they sell things.

That may sound stupid but it works for us too because there's nothing that turns dials quicker than TOO MUCH unfamiliar music. If you played random cuts off say the top 40 albums at any given time you'd be such a mixture of unfamiliarity that you'd sound like a jumbled mess.

So you concentrate on one single at a time. It rotates high (plays too much once popular) because familiarity is key to winning ratings. If you aren't playing the most popular songs enough to satisfy a listenership that wants to sing along then your competition will be and they'll go there. I promise you, even though people may hate the practice, that's how you win...... getting too deep into too many albums is a sure fire way to lose.

AOR or Album Oriented Rock formats do just the opposite and for those listeners that works... but you never see an AOR station at the top of the ratings or sales figures in the market. (almost never)

It's not a perfect system but it works so it's done that way.

Hope that helps. Sorry to ramble.

Well thanks Johny Thunder . I get it now, but still don't like it but thanks for the explanation. It was such a treat a few years back and he still may do it but Alice Cooper would DJ late nights and play the music he liked just how I described. He played variety of different songs deep into albums most people havn't heard. I was like this ****ing rocks. He would talk about the bands too and tell stories it was bad ass to listen too.

I guess the way you describe the radio it works I've had to buy albums so I could get into the bands and hear more. I wouldn't have to buy albums if I could just listen to Alice Cooper DJ on the radio all day.

Yeah AC is a classic example of the AOR thing. It's great and it does work for that audience much of the time but it hasn't translated to other formats. Different types of listeners being targeted though.

FWIW I'm also on a classic rocker that dabbles in the AOR approach. We don't go WAY deep but do play some stuff that wasn't "popular" when a particular album was out. We play new rock from classic artists too and I think we're playing 5 songs... maybe 4... from the new Van Halen disc.

The music behind Alice Cooper gave him a huge vibe in the industry. He was/is one of the greatest showmen ever but also under rated imo. He should be up there with the Beatles and Stones and Ozzy.

Just had to play an Alice Cooper song if I'm going talk about him

I think he's better than all of those but that's just my opinion I realize. Earlier in this thread are several vids of the show I saw on Fathers Day... best show I've ever seen I think, and I've seen KISS twice.
