Sac's 2015 Chiefs Mock Draft - The Epiphany

While it's not the most popular of choices, it's a choice that has to be made. Left guard and right tackle are massive holes. Allen returning may be able to shore up one of those positions, but it's not a guarantee as his performance to date has been less than impressive. Stephenson hasn't been the same since the PED suspension after a quality showing to close out the 2013 season. Depth is a major issue as well as Kush can't beat out guys like McGlynn and Linkenbach. The position needs to be addressed. Smith needs to operate behind a line that consists of guys who are at the 70th percentile of performance for the position; i.e., our offensive linemen, all of them at each position, needs to be better than/performing better than 70% of all OL at each position. I believe that Fisher will be there in 2015. Hudson is there now. Other than that, it's null and void. RT and LG have to be addressed.

As well, WR must be a priority. As bad as our offensive line is, our WR corps might even be worse. Bowe is in the wrong system. Everyone else is just a guy - at best.

Safety needs to be addressed. Berry is likely to retire.

Cornerback needs to be addressed. Smith is good. Everyone else, at this point, is mediocre at best and depth at the position is horrific.

Linebacker needs to be addressed. Johnson may be done and everyone else we seem to throw at the ILB/MLB position is not good.

Suffice it to say, this team has a lot of holes. The good news is, the Chiefs will have a lot of picks in 2015. They have a chance to get better/fill those holes quickly.

As such, here is the newly modified mock:

1. La'el Collins, OT; LSU: 6'5", 320 lb.
- Massive and nasty, Collins has long arms with terrific strength to go along with nimble feet. He's absolutely shut down when he locks onto a defender, a virtual road grader in the run game and more than effective in pass protection.

Three year starter (one at left guard, two at left tackle). Looks to be prototype for the RT position at the next level. At the very worst, he's a Pro-Bowl level guy at LG.

Previous picks: Danny Shelton, DT; Washington; Eddie Goldman, DT; Florida State

2. Cody Prewitt, S; Ole Miss: 6’2”, 212 lbs.
-Prewitt was an absolute ball hawk for the Rebels in 2013 with six interceptions. He's continued that in 2014 where he's arguably the best FS in college. Prototype size with superb instincts and hits like a truck.

Previous picks: Nate Orchard, LB; Utah: Benardrick McKinney, LB; Miss State

3. Dres Anderson, WR; Utah: 6'2", 190 lbs.
- I've bounced between Anderson, Stefon Diggs and Phillip Dorsett with this pick. Right now, I think that Anderson, son of former NFL'er Flipper Anderson, offers the most upside as a potential true #1 NFL WR. He would have been a second rounder at worst, but blew out his knee early in the 2014 season. Quick off the line, accelerates and finds a second gear in the open, he's also got very good hands and runs precise routes. He's got a knack for making the big plays.

Previous picks: Stefon Diggs, WR; Maryland

3. Phillip Dorsett, WR; Miami: 5'10", 195 lb.
- Dorsett is one of the fastest guy in college football right now. True breakaway speed on a compact, thick frame. In 2014, he's averaging 26.6 ypc on 31 receptions with an amazing 9 TD's on those 31 catches.

Previous pick: Eric Kendricks, LB; UCLA; Rashard Greene, WR; Florida State

4. Jeff Heuerman, TE; Ohio State: 6'6", 255 lb.
- Big and athletic, Heuerman has been used inside as an in-line blocker, set as a typical TE and outside as a wideout for the Buckeyes this season. OSU states that he puts up 33 reps at 225 and has a 36.5" vertical. Economics major.

4. Sean Mannion, QB; Oregon State; 6'5", 220 lb.
- When you have extra picks, you select guys like this with some of them. Mannion has an NFL body, arm and understanding of the game. Has great touch on his passes, but can drive them when needed. Has set so many school and conference records that you can't list them all. Not incredibly mobile, but has a good feel for the pocket. Four year starter and three time team captain. This is the type of guy you groom to be a high level NFL starting QB.

Previous pick: Phillip Dorsett, WR; Miami

5. . John Miller, OG; Louisville: 6'2", 321 lbs.
- Second team All-Conference in 2013, Miller is a wide, fundamentally sound OL player who I've liked better so far this year than C Jake Smith, who I had in one of my earlier mocks. Really locks onto guys and gets into the second level quickly. He's a big dude with power. I absolutely love Miller as a potential high level NFL guard.

Quote:
While he may lack elite athleticism, Miller demonstrates intelligence, sound technique and toughness in the trenches with enough quickness in a short area to be a reliable pass-protector when asked to slide and mirror interior rushers, and his initial burst off the snap enables him to get to the 2nd level and target efficiently.
From a technical standpoint, Miller exhibits good bend in his lower half and is rarely overwhelmed as he keeps his feet moving, resets without wasted motion, and establishes good extension to keep defenders out of his frame. Another mid-round type of prospect who's durability and consistency could make him a terrific pro.

5. Wayne Lyons, CB; Stanford: 6’1”, 195 lbs.
- At this point in the draft, Lyons is about as good as it’s going to get for the position, and the Chiefs will likely be in the position of needing quality depth at the CB spot depending on how Cooper progresses and what type of player they have in Gaines. Lyons is an exceptionally smart player who was described as a "physical freak" by Stanford coach David Shaw. A sleeper with a lot of upside.

6. Jeff Luc, MLB; Cincinatti: 6’1”, 256 lbs.
- Former #1 Rated Prep Linebacker who committed to Florida State out of high school. They moved him over to OLB where he never got comfortable. Transferred to Cincinatti after his sophomore season and was moved back into the middle. For the 2014 season, he finally played up to his billing, ending with 121 tackles, 6.5 sacks and 6 forced fumbles.

If you could envision what a MLB would look like, Luc is that guy. Heavily muscled and ripped, huge arms and legs and plays with power. Flows well to the ball and is a fierce tackler.

Previous pick: Jake Smith, C/OG; Louisville (8-01-14)

6. Terrance Plummer, LB; Central Florida: 6’2”, 241 lbs.
- Very solid linebacker who has played both inside and outside for the Knights. Has excellent burst to the ball and is effective in all facets of both inside and outside linebacker responsibilities. A real warrior so far in the 2014 season.

Quote:
Senior linebacker Terrance Plummer poured his heart and soul into the Knights (3-2, 1-0) overtime victory Thursday night.

A career high of 17 tackles. A sack. A forced fumble. A fumble recovery. A 31-24 victory over BYU.

7. . Robertson Daniel, CB; Brigham Young: 6’1”, 205 lbs.
- Daniel, a former Juco All-American after his freshman year, has been the Cougars best defensive back this year and, despite only two seasons, is #2 in school history for pass breakups. Very fluid and instinctive. Has flown under the radar his whole football career, but is a very solid player who would fit well in Sutton's system.

Previous pick: Justin McCay, WR; KU; Quinn Epperly, QB; Princeton

A lot of Oregon State games? No, I don't see every game. I live in the middle of B1G country, not on the Pacific Coast. I've seen a few of his games this year. I don't dislike Mannion, I just fallen off of my "I want him" list. Read that as I don't want him to be a Chief as much as a few other QBs. I wouldn't be pissed about drafting the kid. I like Carden better though, for the reasons I stated. I've seen Carden a few times too. Both have benefited from very good receivers in their careers and that is something to note going forward.

That seems like the absolute perfect 1st round pick, from Dorsey's perspective that is. Poe is going to be a FA after the 2015 season. Just the right time to draft for his position and let the draftee sit on the bench for a year.

Since Dee Ford is a bust thusfar, I'm guessing Dorsey's looking glass will have Lorenzo Mauldin at the top. Looking back, that would have been the right way to go about it. Draft a WR last year... draft an OLB this year... but noooooooooooo....

I've said it elsewhere, but I think Mannion is no worse than Nick Foles as a prospect and I think he's more Peyton Manning-lite than anything. He's really a good football player and would work exceptionally well in this system. I like him as well as any QB in this draft for the Chiefs.

Personally, I don't really care what round a guy is taken, as long as that guy works in the system. For this draft, I picked guys who I think will work well in either Reid's offense or Sutton's defense. You might think that passing over some player and picking another is a bad thing, but it's better than trying to pound a round peg into a square hole.

Fair point.

I'd like a different hole, please.

I can't imagine him on the board past the mid-third round at worst and realistically a high to mid second rounder. The guy has everything you'd want in a safety - great instincts, prototype size, hits like a ton of bricks and has a knack for making the big play.

I've read where some people think he's played conservative in 2014, perhaps trying to protect himself, but the games I've watched it almost looks like the offense is avoiding him. I think he stood out more than Ole Miss' All-American CB Senquez Golson. (Who is going to make someone a very fine nickle corner in his own right.)

Regardless, Prewitt was still named first team All-Conference (SEC) by the coaches and second team All-American in 2014 after being named first team All-American in 2013.
