We can't justify a position that we should have taken Geno at 1.1 with a Russell Wilson/Kurt Warner "you never know" argument. The Chiefs picked up the guy they, and by all accounts most others, thought was the best available QB with their 2nd rounder this year (and a pick TBD later).

i was talking to a buddy of mine last night who is a die hard chiefs fan, and he said that, not me, that alex smith was by far the best qb the chiefs could of gotten this offseason, and hes happy with it. And hes one of the more realistic fans out there. It was a no brainer. And has to say something. The chiefs could of had Kolb for Free, Flynn for cheaper, Carson Palmer for less than they gave up, matt hasselbeck for free, a lot of options that know the Andy Reid/ Mike holmgren systems, and they didnt. They over paid for alex smith. That should ring a bell with some angry fans that the NFL has some sort of respect for alex smith.

Yes. Initially, I was hopeful that the Chiefs would trade for Nick Foles because of what it would say about Reid's confidence in Foles. Of course, that would have looked even more like the Pioli/Cassel situation than this does so people would have had a cow over that too. The fact that Reid picked Alex Smith and that reports suggest that he's tried to trade for Smith before tell me that we should at least give the Reid/Smith combo a chance to see what they can do together.

I loved nick foles in college, and i loved when he got drafted. And I think Andy wanted him too, but the eagles are being bitches, and didnt want to trade him.

With hindsight sure he goes really early. But as a prospect, before he played a down no I don't think he would have went early. The height would always be an issue.

Never said they should have. I don't have a problem with what they did, just pointing out to hootie that we can't declare these qbs one thing or another simple because they were passed on a round or two.

They haven't played a down yet.

Hootie didn't do that. What he declared was that they weren't good prospects not that they couldn't someday shock the world and become good QBs.

All we can do right now is wait n see who pans out at qb in the 2013 season. There were qb's that could have been had that have some nice potential in the 2nd round. Hell, all of them but Manuel. If anyone outside of EJ pans out to a damned good qb, then we ****ed up beyond ****ed up, because they played it "Safe"

As of right now, we dont know because no drafted qb's have played a down in the NFL.

Perfect hindsight is a ridiculous standard to hold them to, IMO.

Not really. They should have done their due diligence to see which QB prospects would pan out. If one does, then it's their fault for not doing enough homework on him and not seeing his potential.

There's not a front office in the league that could live up to that standard. Not one.

Why not? They're job is to project what each prospect in the draft can do. If they miss on one at the most important position on the field, why shouldn't it reflect negatively on their scouting skills?

I can't speak for others, but the fear I have is that Alex will play OK but not great and earn what most Chief QB's get, more time than they deserve. I know that past regimes don't control the fate of this one, but my fear is there just the same. Alex not getting a new contract was a good start at least. I just want this organization to judge the QB with their eyes and not go OUT OF THEIR WAY to find a way to defend them.

A healthy amount of the fan base seems to only want a chance at a fun season with a risk-free QB, and until something different happens I am not going to be able to trust that the organization looks at the QB position differently. Just have to hope that it isn't the case, or that Alex actually is more than I think he is.

So teams like the 49ers, Ravens, Falcons, Packers, etc hitting on their first, second and third round picks at like an 70 to 80 percent efficiency in being top 5 to 10 at their position almost immediately is just them NOT living up to a standard of "doing their due diligence?"

Some of these teams have been competing for the last 5 to 10 years, based on missing on draft picks? Or do you think they were just ALL lucky. It was pure luck that Joe Flacco panned out on a team that already had a Super Bowl winning defense from the old regime or that the Packers went from one franchise QB to the next or the Steelers were able to transition from old veterans to young players back to old veterans while having more winning seasons than losing seasons

Just FOs not living up to a standard then by your logic, then what are they doing to remain competitive??

literally the only team that has proven to be a fraud, by coaching and players leaving the team for other NFL teams is the Patriots lucking into Tom Brady, that is pure luck that bumbling fraud of a FO fell into. Other than that, these other teams have a model they have stuck by for like 20 years lol

I think it's a pretty big negative when a team takes a somewhat head scratching pick over more heralded prospects and then it doesn't pan out. It's not the best example, but the Raiders taking Darrius Heyward-Bey (140 rec/2071 yds/11 TDs) over Michael Crabtree (260 rec/3345 yds/21 TDs) and Jeremy Maclin (258 rec/3453 yds/26 TDs) kind of falls in this category. \

It's only a minor negative, if that, when the entire league, including the team that ultimately takes him, misses on a guy.
