Critical but stable condition, heavily sedated. I have no idea how much brain damage he might have suffered;
Jerry “The King” Lawler, who suffered a heart attack during WWE’s “Monday Night Raw,” is in critical but stable condition, recovering from coronary angioplasty in the Cardiac Care Unit of a Montreal hospital. Lawler’s ex-wife, former WWE diva Stacy Carter, tweeted this morning that he had undergone a procedure in which “a [stent] and a balloon” were implanted and he “is still heavily sedated.” In a statement, WWE said: “As of this morning, Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler is in a cardiac care unit and all his vital signs are stable. WWE will provide additional information as it becomes available. We continue to wish Jerry all the best for a full recovery.” http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...e377_blog.html |

Pro wrestling has a changed a lot over the years. Decades ago it was goofy fun for the whole family, kind of like a traveling circus. I never liked the circus but I have fond memories from my childhood of going to the shows with my family. And then watching these same guys on TV. When I had young children of my own in the 80's and 90's we would watch it on Monday nights during the NFL off season. We knew it was a joke. But it was a goofy "in joke" and we had a lot of fun with it. I haven't seen much lately that I enjoy. I haven't watched it in art least five years, maybe closer to ten. But some of these old school guys gave me a lot of entertainment. It's sad to see them in bad shape (or dead) now.

I don’t watch as much as I used to be but every now and then I flip it over. It seems to me that its more performing and acting now than actual wrestling. Theres always been characters of course, but now its like 30 minutes of a scripted act in the middle of the stage before any actually wrestling begins.

Yeah, I had that discussion with my kids when it went to crap. The shows on broadcast are just giant commercials for the pay-per-views. I had them time the matches versus the periods of inaction and they finally got it. That's when we stopped watching. |

Before, a wrestler could succeed with a shallow gimmick. No need to develop his character through many, many storylines because once he ran through his character in one territory he could then go to a different territory -- where no fans knew about you -- and go through the same story over again against a different opponent. When the territories died off, wrestles needed to constantly keep their gimmicks fresh. Thus, increased time spent on the mic, developing new stories outside of ring-work. |
