Are You a Championship Father???
I think it is important to be a good role model to your kids, and learn as much as possible about being a great parent.

Well, I subscribe to the newsletter at www.fathers.com which is a foundation based out of Kansas City.

They are having a Championship father Weekend, this weekend. Here is the information.

BTW, they are also having these in other cities, so check out the site. It is this Friday night and Saturday morning. If you have kids, look into it.

I'm a father, but not a championship father. I have only had 16 months of practice. But there is plenty of time to still become a champion.

I think one of the most important things is to acknowledge your child's feeling and let them know they're valid, wether you agree with them or not.

I think my dad mostly reacted like I was irrational and expected me to have the same values as him.

It's the difference between saying

"Why the hell do you need those sneakers? If you think I'm paying $17 for a pair of shoes, you're crazy, You shoudn't want those. That's dumb"

versus

"I can understand why you want those $17 Vans shoes. It must be really tough to not have the stuff al the kids are paying attention to, especially when you've got no sports skills to fall back on."

That relationship has brought tears to my eye before. But none of us can be that father. That bar is way, way, way up there. We can only do the best we possibly can, which includes finding ways to improve our parenting techniques. This fathers site has a lot of great information. If I can't attend their seminars or join, I can take a few minutes out of my web activity to learn something from their site and I can spread the word about what they're trying to do. I intend to print some of their material (with permission) in the family section of my newspaper as well.
