California Bay area dealing w/ mass exodus

Oakhater could live near you guise!

“You can’t even contemplate getting into the housing market here,” Hancock said. “And I don’t mean just service workers, but highly skilled professionals. The tech elite are having a hard time affording reasonable housing in Silicon Valley. That makes it difficult for employers to recruit.”

Operators of a San Jose U-Haul business say one of their biggest problems is getting its rental moving vans back because so many are on a one-way ticket out of town.

Dabak cites crowding, crime and politics as the reasons for her own exodus.

“We don’t like it here anymore. You know, we don’t like this sanctuary state status and just the politics,” she said.

She plans to sell her home for about $1 million, buy a much larger place near Nashville for less than half that and retire closer to family and friends.

That said, there's a serious lack of housing in SoCal. There are multiple 20 story mixed use complexes going up in Hollywood, less than a mile from my home. Singles start a $2k a month, 2 bedrooms are $4k a month.

It's an expensive city in which to live but wages markedly higher than in other parts of the country.
dang.

I remember YEARS ago, probably 1999, I was stationed in Lemoore, CA and drove up to SF to meet my brother who was in town for a business trip. We had dinner and started BS-ing with the waitress, and somehow got on the topic of rent in the area. She said "her share" of the rent was like $1500/mo (or something in that range). For years, I thought she was exaggerating, and that no way she had 2 or 3 other roommates (or more) paying that same share.

over time, I've come to believe her, and your post pretty much solidifies it for me. My brain is melting just thinking about it.

And you think that because?

You don't think there are people who can afford to buy and live in a million dollar house in SF?

My parents bought the house I grew up in for $28,000. After all the kids were out of the house, they moved to Laguna Beach. Then they moved down the street to house with not as good a view but on a bigger lot. Each of these moves involved a purchase that was equal to the sale of the prior house.

A few months ago, they sold their house in Laguna Beach for $1.2 Million, and moved to San Diego, paying $750K for the new house.

Laguna Beach, where they just moved from, is very upscale, expensive, and touristy. They sold to a family who moved into the house. As far as I know, they were never even approached by any kind of an investment group.

The vast majority of people buying houses in California are people moving up and planning to live in the new house they move up into.

I'm not so sure that "boom" is ongoing. Many condos in the gaslamp area are selling for 2-4K under list price.

The Hepatitis outbreak and the legion of homeless down there certainly arent helping.

If soccer city or NFL comes back - downtown - it could help.

Man, I couldn't stand the east coast where it was taking me a 45 minutes to go 7 miles. I'd go ****ing bonkers with that congestion. You could have walked there in about 15 minutes.

The appreciation is insanely awesome.

I have close friends that purchased a home in 2004 for $1.25 million.

They just sold that same home for $2.75 million and purchased a $2.4 million dollar home higher up in Beachwood Canyon, as they no longer needed the bigger space because the kids are heading off to college.

My home value has nearly tripled in 15 years.

Fortunately, I work from home but yeah, it can drive you crazy if you let it.

I tend to stay within a 4 miles radius for everything that I need, so that helps. But there's just no way to avoid that type of congestion if you're heading downtown in morning rush hour traffic or if you live in the Valley and are driving home during evening rush hour.

I'll take some pictures when time permits and post them. It's pretty freaking crazy, seeing 12-14 lanes of traffic that looks like a parking lot, with cranes and new high rises just off the freeways in the foreground and the Pacific Ocean in the background.

What is this, you say? A differing a opinion? OH MY!
So a piece written by an extremely well respected California conservative is useless because it points out some bad news based in fact

But this little blurb completely refutes it, and is worthy of being paid attention to because it has some good news? Watching you constantly rip people for their 'confirmation bias' and constantly talking about 'thinking for yourself' has gotten real tiresome

Uhmmm...you realize the article in the OP is based on a study done by Redfin Real Estate, correct?

Do you realize that the article in the OP omits the details that i shared from the original RedFin report that paint the full picture? That sure, while people are moving out, there's actually MORE moving in than out.

What do YOU call that? You'd call that a city in decline? A place people don't want to live? You serious?

How does the narrative change now?

You came in here spouting this bullshit that they're leaving because SF and Cali in general is a bad place to live. Clearly that isn't the case. Reading the actual report would've told you that.

Did you miss the part about more people moving INTO SF than leaving? It was right there in the original report. So yes, you are still stupid.

So yea, i in fact did "get you". Wasn't very difficult either. Essentially, your OP is sensational BS. Good job falling for it.

I'm not talking about the op, I'm talking about the LA Times op-ed you dismissed out of hand because it was written by a dreaded conservative

The narrative hasnt changed at all... you're just as guilty of succumbing to confirmation bias as anyone else, which is why your 'I'm above it all, man' act has gone stale

No i did not dismiss it at all. But it was clearly biased. Very obviously. And i pointed it out.

So you know what i did? I read the ACTUAL report that the OP cites..

So here is dumbass pogue making a thread in an attempt to paint Cali and SF as a failed state/city that's having this "Mass Exodus", when in reality, the city has more people moving in than out, and those moving out are actually staying IN California.

But i'm the dishonest one. uh huh.

I put the full picture, the REAL picture that absolutely changes the narrative in front of your face.

And Banham's story is an OPINION piece, so yes, ANY opinion piece, left or right, should be dismissed. It's a ****ing opinion.
