The Chiefs are taking Geno #1; bank on it

Andy loves him some QBs. And KC has been a bottomless pit of QB suckage. While folks initially freaked out over the ASmith signing (me included), once they locked up Bowe and Albert, it seemed pretty clear that Geno will be the choice at #1.

People say you don't draft a QB #1 to sit on the bench, the first pick of the draft isn't a backup QB. They are right. They say ASmith will be the starter, especially given his compensation. They are right. Ummm, does that mean that Geno is being groomed for a year or two behind Alex? Not necessarily.

What? That is nonsense!

Only in the traditional sense.

I think Reid and Dorsey are thinking waaay outside the box on this one.

If (when) the Chiefs draft Geno, the whole idea of a "backup" QB will be shook up. "Backup" will be a matter of semantics. "Starting" will be a matter of semantics as well.

Reid and Dorsey both see the need for 2 "starting caliber" QBs on a team in today's NFL. San Fran proved beyond a shadow of a doubt last year that it really pays to have 2 QBs on your team who can start for you.

If one "starting caliber" QB goes down, you have another "starting caliber" QB ready to be plugged in and the team doesn't miss a beat.

It has been repeated ad nauseum on this board that the QB is the most important position in all of football. When you have an offense that is predicated on throwing the football 40+ times a game, you can't afford to have a dropoff in productivity should one of your QBs goes down for a time, otherwise your season is effectively over.

Reid and Dorsey get this.

As fans, especially Cheifs fans, we need to rethink our conceptions of "backup" and "starting" and realizing we are entering an era of "starting caliber" QBs.

We are being built to win.

We are being built to win even in the face of adverse contingencies.

We are going to win.

And I like it.

you havent exposed me for shit. you have talked out of your ass. Your best defense is talking about alex smiths 6 years without great coaching. thats a lame ass excuse, especially from chiefs fans who just dumped their entire leadership from front office down to the coach, and brought in winners. So, at the very least, they agree with me, which is much more important than what any ass hurt screen name on a website means.

And at the end of the year, when the chiefs are 10-6 and are in a wild card game, i can listen to you guys make all the excuses. Oh, it was the defense, COLQUITT, succop, jamaal charles. And im fine with that, because at least i will be right about one thing. Alex Smith will help you win games.

We could have done the same thing Alex Smith will do with a number of options.

Matt Moore signed for 8 million for two years and is every bit as good as Smith...I don't think Alex Smith is much better than Kyle Orton, if at all...who Pioli passed on in free agency last year.

Why does Alex Smith suck when he throws 35 passes in a game?
When the opposing teams scored 24, he lost.
Why has he only completed 21 passes over 20 yards, the last two seasons combined?
Why was he benched for a guy that the whole NFL thought wasnt worth a first round pick?
Why has he been benched like 7 times for complete scrubs?

You know why?

Because the guy is a polished turd and a scrub.

When Geno arrives, Alex will wear tighty whities in the shower to hide his shame from having a small vanilla penii.

You've got to tell that to the other NFL teams, because Moore went back to Miami to be a back up. Orton is a back up. Smith was gonna start for another team if not with the Chiefs. Why didn't Moore and Orton go take a starting job?

If they see Alex Smith as a stopgap, I don't care what they gave up for him.

I'd love the move if we draft Geno or another QB high in the draft.

Geno
Barkley
Wilson
Glennon

A combo of one of those guys and Alex would be just fine.

All these quarterbacks have consistency problems...good coaching should be able to smooth that out and all of them have shown really good upside.

Because they aren't starting quality players. They are backup/stopgap quality guys.

Same as Alex Smith.

That's why NOBODY came knocking on his door last offseason to be their starter.

Smith waited for the 49ers to decide what they were doing. He wanted to stay, and they did make him their starter. No one got serious with Smith, because no one thought he was leaving.

They didn't give him a cemented starter contract...they gave him a stopgap 3 year deal.

The same deal I've read we aren't gonna extend.
