Tell me about your beard.

So I'm one of those bald headed men with a luscious flowing beard. I've been growing it about a year now. Trimming it and maintaining it myself. Again...I'm bald, I haven't paid anyone to cut my hair in almost two decades.

Well for its birthday, I decided to treat my beard to a "professional" trimming at Sole Patch Men's Shop.

I was not impressed.

After telling my stylist to fade the sides and keep the length; she ended up about shortening my beard by about an inch and butchered the caterpillar that lived below my nose.

Needless to say, she set me back about 2 months of growth for $20. I could have done that myself and picked up a couple of 6-packs on my way home.

-anyway-

Do any of you with god-like beards have a place you like to recommend?

Also...conditioners, butters, oils...what do you like? I am still experimenting with these products.

And Tyler Bray.

I have a goatee (technically a Van Dyke but that's a different story).

A full beard makes my face look fatter and itches when it comes in. If I go about a week without shaving, it really begins to itch and drives me nuts.

Otherwise it's pretty full and more gray is appearing than I like. I shampoo it every few days and I usually trim it although I do have a stylist who does a decent job.

One downside: shorter moustache hairs that curl up and tickle the underside of my nose. Anyone else have that issue?

It's full, dark and gives me a somewhat intimidating appearance combined with my permanent scowl.

It spawned out of shear laziness and I wear it year round. The gal that cuts my hair does the beard as well for an extra $5.

I scare the shit out of my kids when I clean shave.

I use to have a goatee but that seemed like work maintaining if every week and if you trimmed one side too much then it was a constant fix it. I got sick of shaving.

I like my beared no ****s given if others don't. I get plenty of compliments.

Common questions:

Doesn't itch? Well no not until you just asked that question asshole.

Isn't it hot during summer? Not at all & it keeps my face from getting burnt while fishing and the wind feels good blowing through it.

How long are you going grow it? ZZ Top but I doubt it ever gets that long. I wish I started growing this long time ago.

Tell me about your beard.

I've had some form of beard or goatee since the early 2000s. Going full beard for the last 7 years-ish. I've been growing out the beard for the last 8 months or so, so I've got some decent length now. I visit a barber every 6 weeks or so, and the woman that trims it does a nice job. I get these unruly hairs around my neckline that curl out and give me wings.

I shampoo every other day and oil afterward at night. I'll use a beard balm in the mornings. I have a nasty sensitivity to perfumes and can't handle oils or balms with hardly any scent at all, so I use unscented from Rogue. I like them. I've also made my own oil with cosmetic grade hazelnut oil and just a couple drops of essential oil.

I go to Sportsclip once or twice a year and they do a nice job. I leave it up to them for the most part and they don't take any off the beared just trim it up if needed.

I love the hot towel over my face and scalp massage. All problems in life go away for a moment. It's bliss.

I love Sportsclip

I started growing my beard about 10yrs ago while sitting in a hospital bed barely able to breathe. I remember just saying to myself that I am going to grow a beard and never shave it off. I just use shampoo, conditioner and a comb. Trim the sides to a clean look on the chin and that's about it. Nothing special.

My beard is quite lengthy and I don't trust myself to clean it up weekly. I clean my neck area every day, and visit an old-school barber every saturday morning. He cleans it up (neaten and just trim the strays, dont touch length until its where you want it) and fades the sideburns (i'm bald also). If they are charging you more than $10 for a beard trim, walk out and never go back. This dude charges me 8$ and does an awesome job.

For products, I use a shampoo once a week and use a leave-in beard balm every day for shaping and brushing to keep it neat.

I've been trying to shape mine so it has a slightly rounded off point under my chin, but I'll be damned if I can get it right, lol. Have started using a bear balm to help shape it, with mixed results, but it does seem to take away some of the sharpness anyway. I use a beard trimmer with a guard for the sides, and free hand the rest. Trying to see if I can use a comb and trimmer together to get the shape, but I need some more practice at it.

Just chin whiskers only. Below bottom lip. No mustache or other facial hair. What is this called?
