****Official **** You Mike Mayock Thread**** (OP UPDATED)

http://m.nfl.com/news/0ap1000000140130/

The Kansas City Chiefs need a quarterback, but there aren't any this season that look like a top-ten talent, much less a No. 1 overall pick.

The way Mike Mayock sees it, the Chiefs should be looking to the offensive line for their first overall pick. And there are only four players worth the No. 1 overall pick in this draft for Kansas City: Alabama guard Chance Warmack, UNC guard Jonathan Cooper, Texas A&M tackle Luke Joekel, or Central Michigan tackle Eric Fisher.

Mayock said on a conference call Monday that some people will say he's crazy to potentially take a guard at No. 1 overall, but Mayock says Warmack is the best player in this draft. So he doesn't see it as crazy at all.

In the end, Mayock believes the pick could come down to Joekel or Warmack. This is a draft where the top-shelf players don't stand apart too much, and there may not be a huge difference between picks 5 and 25. That makes it a tricky spot for the Chiefs.

Don't be surprised if Kansas City builds from the inside out, and finds their quarterback of the future later.

He gives the Chiefs 4 options at #1 and they're all offensive lineman? Go **** yourself bro

@Jacobs71: Here is what Mayock said on #Chiefs pick in full "Well, part of it depends on what they're going to do with free agency and Branden Albert."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"I think the answer to that, obviously, is going to give you the answer. Sitting where they are, let's face it, they need a QB."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"We don't know that there are a lot of people who think Geno Smith is in that ballpark."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"I don't, but there are a lot of people that think he should be considered."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"When you look at what they're going to do, what are they going to do with Dwayne Bowe?"

@Jacobs71: Mayock:" Whoever the quarterback is, they need a wide receiver. And I think John Dorsey has to be thinking what is the big picture here?"

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"I've got one, and I've got 34. What is the best combination of getting the most value out of that?"

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"And I think that offensive lineman at 1 is the most solid guy they can go with."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"I don't care whether it's Warmack or Joeckel. People will tell me I'm crazy that a guard can't go No. 1."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"I think he's the best player in the draft, so I would argue that."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:" But either way, I think they've got to get an offensive lineman and come back at 33 and prepare to go with a QB or WR."

@Jacobs71: When I asked Mayock about who fits Reid's system at QB: " I think Matt Barkley makes a lot of sense."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:" He's a guy as a junior at USC looked so much different than he did this year."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"With Landry Jones and Tyler Wilson, I think all three of those guys you have to go back and watch junior tape. "

@Jacobs71: Mayock:" So I think Barkley fits what he does. I think Ryan Nassib fits what he does."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"I think Landry Jones and Tyler Wilson both can fit what he does."

@Jacobs71: Mayock:"So of those, that group of guys of the top seven, eight quarterbacks, I think those are the guys that did it most efficiently."

I'll puke if we come out of this thing with Warmack, a CB, a LB and Landry Jones in the fourth.

Why?

4 years in the WCO, solid accuracy in the short/intermediate routes, best accuracy on 20+ yard passes.

He was a top 10 draft pick last year playing the WCO. I can see why people think this. I'm not a huge Barkley fan though.

I can be sold Barkley. I can't ANYBODY on the O-line. It would be a ridiculous waste of resources and anything but "value"

You need to dial back your opinion of your own opinions. You believing something isn't enough to make it true.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying here, but if you're saying it's not possible for a guard or a cornerback to be better players than every QB in this draft, you're nuts. I agree it's not likely though.

I disagree. I think it does take those things into account. It sounds like you're not taking the fact that this one pick is one of many personel moves a team will make over the period of years that this pick will potentially play for this team into account.

Draft classes of QBs like that simply don't happen anymore in the modern NFL, where gimmick offenses, shotgun, wide open terminology, slimmed down playbooks, and highly restrictive rules for defenses make QBing so easy to anybody with an accurate arm with a good release, okay pocket presence, and the ability or will to learn as much as he can.
Taking a QB that's going to be the 15th best QB in the league with the 1st pick overall would be a terrible move. It's very possible that the right coach (Charlie Weis) could turn Matt Cassel into the 15th best QB in the league. No thanks.

Here's a good read on why Barkley was the same player this year as he was last year when he was a top 10 caliber pick.

http://secondroundstats.com/2013/02/...ics-breakdown/

Barkley fans will like this.

He's shown to be not very accurate in the short intermediate routes, IIRC.

But either way, I don't care. I don't think they take Geno at this point, so we need to start looking elsewhere.

The main reason I hate Barkley is he just falls apart when he's pressured.

Geno is far better under pressure, and has a better arm to throw when he's off balance or on the run.

That makes a BIG difference in the NFL.

And it's not rocket science here. Matt Cassel can't make throws Aaron Rodgers can because of his shitty arm. Duh. If you need perfect mechanics to drive the ball down the field you're gonna be ****ed in critical situations.

I want Geno, but would be just fine with Barkley.

About the only trade down I'd take would be moving back a spot with Jacksonville and them getting Geno and us getting Barkley and next years first as well as us getting another mid rounder this year.

I wouldn't cry.

That drive isn't impressive at all. He had a clean pocket on every throw, and was not pressured. Receivers wide the **** open.

It will be very Chiefs like to take a G at 1 overall, so I guess I wont' be too terribly upset if it went down.

Matt Barkley is in no way afraid of getting hit. Whomever thinks that does not watch football and pulled that out of their ass. There was that one game where Barkley saw the blitz coming and basically got speared off his feet while managing to throw the ball away.
