A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:



Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Cool little article. Hosmer's arm is so impressive, that the Royals have decided that he'll be the cutoff man on balls hit to right instead of the 2nd baseman.

Well, I'm glad we got Broxton. Not only was Soria horrible again, but he apparently left the game due to elbow soreness.

He left the game with a sore elbow. My guess is the comment had as much to do with that in combination with his performance than anything. Can't say the thought didn't cross my mind.

Oh, and re: Soria after May last year ... he wasn't perfect once he demoted himself and came back, but he still only blew two saves after that. He gave up 10 runs in 38 1/3 innings. Four of them were in one appearance. Two of them were in non-save situations.

I don't think monthly splits tell you much about closers. One outing can severely skew the statistics. Take Soria in July. He had one bad outing over 2/3 of an inning, and his ERA jumps up to 3.86. In his other 11 innings, his ERA was 0.81.

I'm not saying the guy is 100 percent the same and won't rule out the possibility he's seen his best days. But I think it's more likely he had the worst month of his career after adopting a new pitch that wasn't effective over the long term.

They have plenty of great options if Soria is out for an extended period:

Crow
Holland
Broxton

Heck, even Kelvin Herrerra would be effective in that role, IMO. He's got the best stuff out of the entire group (And Crow has the filthiest stuff I've seen live since John Smoltz was in his prime)
