The Chiefs are taking Geno #1; bank on it

Andy loves him some QBs. And KC has been a bottomless pit of QB suckage. While folks initially freaked out over the ASmith signing (me included), once they locked up Bowe and Albert, it seemed pretty clear that Geno will be the choice at #1.

People say you don't draft a QB #1 to sit on the bench, the first pick of the draft isn't a backup QB. They are right. They say ASmith will be the starter, especially given his compensation. They are right. Ummm, does that mean that Geno is being groomed for a year or two behind Alex? Not necessarily.

What? That is nonsense!

Only in the traditional sense.

I think Reid and Dorsey are thinking waaay outside the box on this one.

If (when) the Chiefs draft Geno, the whole idea of a "backup" QB will be shook up. "Backup" will be a matter of semantics. "Starting" will be a matter of semantics as well.

Reid and Dorsey both see the need for 2 "starting caliber" QBs on a team in today's NFL. San Fran proved beyond a shadow of a doubt last year that it really pays to have 2 QBs on your team who can start for you.

If one "starting caliber" QB goes down, you have another "starting caliber" QB ready to be plugged in and the team doesn't miss a beat.

It has been repeated ad nauseum on this board that the QB is the most important position in all of football. When you have an offense that is predicated on throwing the football 40+ times a game, you can't afford to have a dropoff in productivity should one of your QBs goes down for a time, otherwise your season is effectively over.

Reid and Dorsey get this.

As fans, especially Cheifs fans, we need to rethink our conceptions of "backup" and "starting" and realizing we are entering an era of "starting caliber" QBs.

We are being built to win.

We are being built to win even in the face of adverse contingencies.

We are going to win.

And I like it.

The fact is, if you draft a QB in the first round, you must give them every chance to succeed. Because if you hit that pick, you are NEVER letting that player go. If you think it will ultimately result in the QB being more successful by giving them a half a year or a year to develop, it would be irresponsible not to do so. Because if that QB succeeds, you have a decade of success.

It's funny, because Geno dwarfs Barkley in accuracy to all levels of the field, save 20+ yards. Barkley, meanwhile, didn't hit 70% in the 1-5 or 6-10 yard range.

I really think Geno could be Eli Manning 2.0.

But but but, it was those tuff Pac 12 defenses.

And Barkley's OL was bad.

And he had poor coaching.

And he had to deal with pressure.

Bullshit, Dane. You've proven with your putrid rants over the past month that you desperately don't want the Chiefs to take Geno Smith, just so you can be proven right.

You MUST be right about this after the debacle of the 2012 Chiefs, and how they made Dane look so awfully dumb.

It's time to restore Dane's credibility! And Geno is his white whale.

No doubt. you have been anti Geno Smith since day 1, then hopped on the wagon for a day, then right back off into haterville. You care.

Shit, you can say that about any of the other positions we would take if we don't go QB.

DL - 2-3 year development and high bust rate. We should know this being we are presently in an offseason where we let a top five DL that was a "generational talent" walk out the door, for nothing...and had to drastically cut the pay of the other top 3 DL or we would have cut him, too. Jackson and Poe are recent very high picks and the team has been talking to Cullen Jenkins and Chris Canty about the other end position. That is surely a precursor to the team filling the need in free agency. We also have Bailey back there and this is his third year. Who knows, maybe we try to bring Walace Gilberry back.

CB - 2-3 year learning curve. If we are talking Milliner, I'd probably take a year off the development curve because he comes from a pro ran system at Alabama. Even though he has little actual tape as a starter there, he showed decent skills. No way I ever see him as an elite guy, though.

OL - Warmack? A guard can NEVER be worth a top 5 pick. I don't care how good he is. Taking ANY guard with a first overall pick IS A GUARANTEED BUST BECAUSE OF LACKING POSITIONAL IMPORTANCE. We just went over this whole thing in 2009, remember? Joeckel or Fisher? That means we only upgraded guard with the top pick and the situation would be a log jam. They franchised Albert with the knowledge that he doesn't want to play anything but left tackle and they are currently negotiating a long term deal. There could be no bigger waste of resources than using the first overall pick on any linemen. This is also a deep free agent class of OL and the draft is deep and talented. Taking one at first overall would be a terrible move.

LB - 3 of our 4 starting linebackers were pro bowlers. Two are in their primes and one is just about to enter his. I don't see the need for the first overall pick he, especially with the fact that there really isn't a guy that is worth the pick. I can say this, if we are stuck at 1 and are dead set on not taking a quarterback, I want another pass rusher. The system we are gonna be running only works if guys can get to the passer quickly. This is one of the few positions hat we could draft and get some instant impact.

S - Vaccaro is a really good prospect and I would love to have him, but looking at this years free agent class of safeties makes my mouth water...especially William Moore. If we strike out in free agency, there are a handful of good safeties that could come in and play right away that are gonna be mid rounders.

WR/TE - none of these guys are a first overall kinda guy. Not even close.

RB - see; WR/TE

Looking over the whole team, the only way we could get a decent return on our investment without going QB, is to take a pass rushing DL/LB and try to predicate a defense based on killing quarterbacks like when we had Neil Smith and Derrick Thomas.

We didn't have a QB back then, either.

One is still available. I bet $50.00 that Geno Smith is not taken by the Chiefs at the #1 pick. If I lose I give 50 to the 501c charity of your choice. I send to you in the form of a check that you forward on. If you lose you do the same for the Eddie Kennison Lupus Foundation.

The money is there. Only two people who have defended the process have had the balls to try and take the money. I offered the bet three times. Take it.
