Silly argument about paintings

I am at work today and I was talking to my co-worker about "The Scream", which sold at an auction for nearly 120 million dollars. Anyway, I referred to it as a painting, and he quickly corrected me "IT'S NOT A PAINTING, IT'S A PASTEL!". Which is correct, it is a pastel. But isn't a pastel still a painting? I looked up "painting" and it says Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a surface (support base).

I also found a billion videos of artists using pastel crayons (or whatever they're called) and referring to their work as "paintings" like this one for example

So no, it isn't a painting in the literal sense that it was painted with paint and a brush, but is it still wrong to refer to it as a painting?

George Catlin

Painted Native Americans in the early 1800's . I saw his collection at the Nelson and it is breath taking!! If you have Any interest in Indians and the Old West-this is a Must see. His collection is second to none-he was able to gain their trust and paint their Chiefs and daily lives like no other artist. Sadly Most of his subjects would be dead from Small pocks, starved or shot within a decade of painting their cultures.

This same tool at work made another reeruned argument today. Now bear with me here..somehow all of us there were talking about how some porn stars bleach their assholes. (Don't know how it got there...).

So the "painting guy" says "They're crazy if they're putting Clorox bleach on their assholes!". At which point I said "You realize bleaching something doesn't mean you have to use Clorox? There are other ways to bleach something.". He said "How can you bleach something without using bleach you idiot!! You're the same idiot that said its ok to call a pastel a painting!".

At which point I just facepalmed and walked away. No point in arguing. The dude is in his 50s and thinks he's smarter solely because he is older. Yet I know for a fact he fails at 3rd grade level math...

Dane - now that you're here, help me clear up the painting or pastels argument. I say they're paintings. I had evidence to back me up. Yet this guy at work called me a moron because he went to fancy "art school".

The fact is that the International Association of Pastel Societies and The Pastel Journal define pastel artwork as paintings. Case closed.

From one of their sites... http://www.pastelinternational.com/

A pastel is a pastel and it is also a painting... just like a watercolor is more specifically a watercolor but also a painting.
