Teicher: Ranking top 10 available players for Chiefs

NFL Draft: Ranking top 10 available players for Chiefs
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star
As the Chiefs prepare to make the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft for the first time in franchise history, we’re making our own draft board. Each week leading up to the April 25 draft, The Star will rank the top 10 prospects at key positions of need for the Chiefs. Not all are worthy of the No. 1 pick — the Chiefs may decide to trade down — but all are worth keeping an eye on before the draft starts April 25.

1. Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama. The Chiefs need a cornerback to pair with Brandon Flowers, and Milliner is the best one available.

2. Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah. Fans might be weary of the Chiefs drafting at this position, but they will need some help here, particularly if Glenn Dorsey departs as a free agent.

3. Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas. The Chiefs need to draft Wilson or any player they believe can become a franchise quarterback.

4. Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M. He makes sense only if Branden Albert leaves as a free agent.

5. Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia. The Chiefs are loaded at his position, but top pass rushers are difficult to pass up.

6. Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee. He’s not worth the top pick, but the playoffs were more proof the Chiefs need plenty of help at wide receiver.

7. Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia. The Chiefs have to solve their quarterback problem one way or another.

8. Damontre Moore, OLB, Texas A&M. He’s probably better off as an end in the 4-3 defense, but can play outside linebacker in the 3-4 and is a strong pass rusher.

9. Chance Warmack, G, Alabama. It doesn’t make a lot of sense for the Chiefs to take a guard with the top pick, but Warmack isn’t just any guard.

10. DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Clemson. Like Patterson, the Chiefs would be reaching to get him. But he’s another top receiving prospect.

Your top 10, if based on need, should also account for the depth at the position in the draft.

Teicher putting Milliner at 1 is ****ing reeruned.

I think the next few weeks may be as big as FA itself. What the Chiefs do with Albert is going to have a lot of say in what they do with the #1 pick. So this next period here where they have a chance to sign him is going to be important, to say nothing of Bowe.

Teicher is supposed to weigh in with his opinions on what the Chiefs should do with their own free agents sometime this week:

Here is a list of potential Chiefs free agents. The contracts of these players will expire in March unless they re-sign.

Seems pretty straightforward what the Chiefs need to do here. Since John Dorsey and Andy Reid are still new in town, next week I’ll do the neighborly thing and offer them some free advice on which of these players should be retained and which ones should be allowed to move on.
So look for that here next week.

Potential unrestricted free agents
OT Branden Albert
WR Dwayne Bowe
P Dustin Colquitt
DB Travis Daniels
DL Glenn Dorsey
DB Abram Elam
LS Thomas Gafford
RB Peyton Hillis
OL Russ Hochstein
LB Edgar Jones
OL Ryan Lilja
TE Jake O’Connell
DL Ropati Pitoitua
QB Brady Quinn
TE Martin Rucker
LB Brandon Siler
DL Shaun Smith
LB Leon Williams

Potential restricted free agent
DB Kyle McCarthy

Exclusive rights free agents
TE Steve Maneri
OL Bryan Mattison
