MWC may get Automatic BCS bid
Just saw this story on ESPN.com....awesome.
MWC could get automatic bid SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Mountain West Conference has performed so well the past two seasons that it could receive an automatic bid to the BCS in the 2012 and '13 seasons. BCS executive director Bill Hancock was hesitant Wednesday to say the MWC, which has placed Utah and TCU in the Bowl Championship Series the last two seasons, was on course to become the seventh automatic qualifying conference. But he did tell the conference commissioners and athletic directors gathered here this week for meetings that they should be aware of the strides the Mountain West has made toward earning an automatic bid. The BCS rates non-automatic qualifying leagues using three criteria that measure the strength of its best teams and the league as a whole. The first two seasons of the four-year evaluation period were 2008 and '09, banner years for the MWC. The Big East, Big 12, Big Ten, Atlantic Coast Conference, Pac-10 and Southeastern Conference currently receive automatic BCS bids. "If they [the Mountain West Conference] meet the threshold, they'll be the seventh," Hancock said, though he added the way the other conferences perform over the next two seasons influences that threshold. Hancock also said the BCS in the future would like to avoid playing its non-championship games on weekday nights because it hurts attendance. He cited the fact that Iowa brought 28,000 fans in January to the Orange Bowl, which was played on a Tuesday. One of the criteria that the Mountain West conference has to meet every year for the 4 year period is that they have to have 50% or more of the amount of teams that the conference with the most teams in the final BCS standings has.
So if the most a single conference has is 4, then the MWC needs 2. Well, since BYU sucks this year, the MWC will probably only get 2 in this year, and the SEC currently has 7 teams in the top 25, and they will likely end with about 5, meaning the MWC will need 3 (I think they round up). So the only way for this to work is for SDSU to beat TCU today. It probably won't happen, but it would be for the better of the conference if it did. If it wasn't for this blatant block in the back that wasn't called... ...Or the blatant fumble that was reviewed and called not a fumble here (biggest travesty ever) at the 1:42 mark.... ....Then SDSU would be 9-0 and this wouldn't be a big deal because the MWC would end with 3 teams in the BCS final rankings (Also I love how the Big 12 biased announcers in the first video give credit for the great block when its clearly a Block in the back) |

They probably deserve it more than the Big East does.

Yup. They're gonna have a 3+ loss team playing in a BCS game.
Here's the thing about the MWC: After Utah goes to the Pac-10 and BYU goes independent, who's left? Wouldn't Boise State just go to the MWC so they can renew their BCS pass for the foreseeable future? |

Utah losing today pretty much sealed the MWC's fate. Unless the BCS commissioner gives them an exemption, MWC will not be a BCS conference in 2 years.

Wouldn't Utah's loss not affect MWC's future since they're moving to the Pac 10 anyway? |

All of these must happen all 4 years. This is year 3. They have met all the criteria the last 2 years. 1. The highest ranked team from the non-AQ conference must finish higher than the top qualifier of any BCS conference in the final BCS Rankings 2. The conference must average as a whole better than any BCS conference in the final rankings. 3. The conference must finish with 50% or higher of the number of the BCS conference with the most teams in the final top 25 ranking. They won't meet this criteria this year. http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/...l-championship |

They screw with the ratings components every year so they can pretty much control what the want to. If they don't want the MWC to qualify, they'll figure out a way to tweak the system just enough to likely keep them out.
I just root for the most f'd up situation possible so that this thing might finally go away. Having Boise State and TCU finish undefeated and not play for the title would be pretty good. |

MWC is going to have some good football in the upcomming years. Maybe this is what my Fresno State needed. Maybe they can get higher quality players.
