If true, this is a huge blow to Missouri. I would have to think the environment at Purdue after all this AD/athletic dept. as a whole drama went down it everyone would be walking on eggshells and there would not be much trust between any of the parties involved.
In the end, as a long suffering MU fan it would turn out as so many promising opportunities before have. Being a Chiefs/Royals/Tigers fan I am obviously a glutton for punishment. |

Such BS.
If he were staying, this would be over. The entire holdup is he's making his way back to West Lafayette to meet with his players and tell them he's leaving, before they hear about it somewhere else. Both schools are denying anything's happened because they don't want to undercut that meeting. The only way this blows up in MU's face is if Painter has a change of heart on his way back to PU, a la Dana Altman or Bobby Cremins. EDIT: That was before the Andy Katz news. HOLY SHIT NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

How in the **** does this get to this point if Alden didn't know with much certainty that he could land his target?

Matt Painter has turned down Missouri and will remain coach of the Purdue men's basketball team, a source with knowledge of the situation tells ESPN.com's Andy Katz. Painter and Missouri athletic director Mike Alden met Tuesday morning in Orlando, Fla., to discuss the Tigers' opening. Painter was offered the job but did not say either way at that time whether he'd take it. Painter met with Alden while on vacation in Florida. After hearing of Missouri's courtship of its coach, Purdue released a statement saying it was committed to keeping Painter. "Although we will not go into any details at this time, we encourage Matt to stay, through our words and action," Purdue spokesman Tom Schott said Tuesday during a hastily arranged teleconference. "We want Matt to remain a Boilermaker." Painter, 40, has been named the Big Ten's coach of the year three times and has led the Boilermakers to four straight seasons of 25 or more wins. Purdue (26-8) made it to the third round of this year's NCAA tournament but was knocked out there by Final Four participant VCU. Missouri will continue to find a replacement for Mike Anderson, who left the program to take over at Arkansas, where he served as an assistant for 17 years before working his way up the head coaching ladder. |
