Not a rumor: Ryan Lilja may be returning to KC

EDIT: No longer a rumor. The Chiefs have reportedly reached out to Lilja.

We're three deep at guard, however. If this is true, I think this portends ugly things for Rodney Hudson's recovery. I think the Chiefs may be angling for a patch at center.

The Return of Ryan Lilja?
posted by The Gentry
Apr 06, 2013

I've never had inside information before, but today I do. It's weird - and it was from out of the blue today - but I have it on good authority that Ryan Lilja is negotiating with the Chiefs to return for the 2013 season. That isn't to say that he would make the cut for the active roster after training camp, but I'd say he's got a damn good shot at that. What would you think to have Lilja back in the fold?

TBG said the new regime sees Allen as a RT...this is probably just a sign that they want to fill LG without having to use a pick on a guy that needs to start.

All of those quotes are speculating.

How about quoting Reid talking about the situation with the 1999 draft and the Saints...or the quotes from Chiefs scouts likening Geno to Donovan...or John Dorsey talking about the Aaron Rodgers selection and how they could take Geno with intentions to develop him for a similar amount of time...

Oh, who am I kidding?

Joeckel will be the pick.

Interesting... but I disagree.

Chiefs next season with left tackle ability: Joeckel/Fisher, Stephenson

Chiefs next season with guard ability: Asamoah, Schwartz, Allen, Hudson, Stephenson

Chiefs next season with right tackle ability: Allen, Stephenson, Schwartz

Now... Chiefs next season with center ability: Hudson.

I like Luke Patterson as much as the next guy, but guys like him do not have good track records in regime changes.

I'd be happy if they trade up from our third rounder to take Barrett Jones...I think that guy would be a perfect fit.

I'd also like to point out that I think the "we want to trade Albert" talk is a smokescreen.

Think about it...at first, it was reported that we wanted a second rounder...then reports came out that we want a 2 and another mid to late rounder...a day or two ago, a report came out saying we want 2 second rounders.

Seems to me one of two things are happening.

1) we are using Albert to gauge which teams are looking for a LT and how bad they want one, but have no intentions of actually trading him.

2) multiple teams want to trade for Albert and the Chiefs are making the updated compensation demands public to possibly entice more teams to get in on the sweepstakes.

Remember...Dorsey has said publicly that the team wants Albert here long term and Reid called him a pro bowl quality LT that he wanted to trade up for in 2008.

BTW ProFootballFocus ranked our O line as 12th best in the NFL. Thats pretty damn good considering our qb play. A 12th ranked O pine does not need to draft a OT when our LT was 6th best last year.

So is everyone assuming that Reid and Dorsey don't see either Schwartz or Allen as RT's? It seems to me that Asamoah and either Schwartz/Allen MIGHT be our only two guards at the moment. With Albert, Allen/Schwartz,and Stephenson as our tackles.

FWIW, Heck was on Metro Sports Red Zone yesterday saying he prefers big, strong, powerful guards. He mentioned Allen and Asamoah by name.

and for the great ones, say like John Elway, he played his best at 37, and 38.

Not that I think at all that Alex Smith will be a chief when he is even 33, but lets stop pretending that hes gonna die in the next year. Even if some of you wishes he would.
You are ****ing high.

John Elway was at his best in his prime years from the ages of 25 to 33.
He carried the mediocre offensive talent for years.

Mike Shannahan surrounded him with far more talent than he'd ever played with before in his career at the ages of 37-38, and installed a system that maximized efficiency for Elway.

And ftr, Elway is one of only 2 or 3 QBs over the age of 33 to win a SB.

So history suggests that if Alex Smith, by some freak miracle of nature, actually plays well enough to warrant the price paid for him, has to do it within the next 4 or so years.

We essentially paid a premium for a 4 year window, at best.

At best? No. The window, at best, is considerably longer than that. Even if we accept your contention that Elway's prime ended at age 33 (and assume that this will be the same for Alex Smith), it's impossible to argue that Elway's window as a solid franchise QB didn't stay open through his Super Bowl winning years.
