The main requirement that should be looked for in replacing Kendickless is a pulse.

What if we got a big safety to put in the box so Berry can roam in the backfield?
Maybe they'll do that with Sanders Commings next year?

Why would you have Sanders Commings do what Berry is best at when he has 1/5th the talent?

Nope. We need someone who can play the field and is a ballhawk. He's more of an enforcer/hitter type. They should go BPA on FS or WR in the first round and then fill the gaps through FA accordingly.

I wonder if Antone Exum will be targeted as a safety or a CB.
If we could grab him in the 4th, I'd like him as a FS.

I agree that it would be nice to have an upgrade over Kendrick Lewis.
Part of the problem is managing the cap and how much money KC invests in the safety position. Eric Berry has two more years on his contract with a cap number of $11,619,700 for 2104 and $8,357,700.00 for 2015. Jairus Byrd would be good, but what would be the cap dollar cost? Strong Safety Nate Allen would have the Philadelphia/Andy Reid connection, but again not sure what he will command in a contract? Also can Nate shift to Free Safety? T.J. Ward is a very good free agent safety but he too is a strong safety and will get a pretty good contract. Interesting side note, Byrd, Allen and Ward were all 2nd round draft picks. We’ve already traded that pick away, so we don’t have that option. KC will probably look at cheaper alternatives. Allow Kendrick Lewis to leave through free agency since his contract is up Re-sign Quintin Demps to a longer term contract. I like him for special teams and in Sutton’s defense, he plays a lot. Maybe Sanders Commings can be developed into a good safety for Kansas City. 6’0”, 223 lbs, 4.4 40 yard dash, and CB skills, makes him an attractive possibility. I think we also use a 3rd or 4th round pick to try and improve at that position. |

I think I remember reading a comment from the bad guy that they are working on an extension for Berry. Sure would be nice to get that cap number under control.

The franchise tag for safeties is under 7 million. If we can get Berry inked for that much per year on a long term deal, do it.
Something like 6years 42 million with 23 guaranteed. Get that kinda deal done and it probably drops his cap number by at least 4 million. |
