Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 21, 2013, 6:46 PM EDT
Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

Between the last "generational" QB prospect (P. Manning) and the most recent "generational" QB prospect (A. Luck), here are the QBs taken at 1.1:

Tim Couch
Michael Vick
David Carr
Carson Palmer
Eli Manning
Alex Smith
JaMarcus Russell
Matthew Stafford
Sam Bradford
Cam Newton

That's not exactly a murderer's row of QBs.
Why would you exclude Manning and Luck? Throw those names in one bag. Throw Eric Fisher and Luke Joeckel's names in another bag.

Which bag are you drawing from?

Just have to wait and see.
I'm just taking the true fan approach. They are with the Chiefs, it will be good, until proven otherwise.

I've dealt with the facts the whole time; you continue to sidestep them and essentially try to place yourself in an unassailable spot and/or simply excuse the front office regardless of the outcome.

You appear to be arguing that no matter what happens, Reid gets a pass for this pick. You're citing the 'weakness at the top of the class' as though no talent will come out of it. You seem to be ignoring the fact that this front office seems content to fill a hole that it's dying to create and somehow justifying the decision by again citing a weak draft class.

If the class is so !@#$ing weak, why make more holes in your roster? Or if it's only weak at the top, why spend #34 on a QB that's ceiling is slightly above average when the draft is actually quite deep from 15-40?

The front office has ****ed this up except for one possible scenario - Alex Smith does become a top 10 QB, Geno Smith does bust out and Joeckel/Fisher end up being clear improvements on Brandon Albert for a very long time.

But no, just keep on making excuses for the front office. This is just the same mindless contrarian bullshit that you spouted during the ***** regime - that's why I pointed it out.

It turns out you're not even a ***** ballwasher, you're just dittohead - "yes sir, front office, whatever you decide works for me and if you decide poorly...well that's okay, there wasn't an Andrew Luck just sitting there waiting for you."

GMs separate themselves from the pack in drafts like this one - not in drafts like the Luck draft. My wife could've made the Andrew Luck pick; I'm not impressed. If these guys are worth a shit at all they'll still make this team a lot better given the tools they inherited.

I suspect they won't, however.

I think he'll get some carries. LeSean McCoy had around 270 2 years ago and last year he had 200 in only 12 games (on pace for 266).

Charles had 285 last year. Not too big of a difference, plus like you said, I think his pass catching abilities will be emphasized.

No its not. What matters is WINS from Sept to Jan.

Joeckel could bust, and the Chiefs still win games. Thats all that matters. Not what happens in April.

If Albert is traded and Joeckel busts, this is going to be an embarrassing season.

Alex Smith needs perfect pass protection or he's gonna get sacked 60 times.

They always have an excuse, always. This is just the latest one, as they can't use the standard one where another team picked their guy ahead of them this year.

You know, if they had to pay those huge contracts like Jamarcus Russel got from the Raiders, I could give them a lot of slack. I wouldn't want them to gamble either. But not now, sorry. It is set up on a tee for them, and they probably won't take a swing.

If by chance they do, I will be back on full homer mode, because then we will see they are actually trying to win a championship. As it is, they are trying to be competitive, to gain respect and sell tickets. Big difference, and Shane069 was right 8 years ago.

And yours doesn't exist. Let's all just blindly accept that Reid and Dorsey are right.

It worked out so well for you when your hero was in charge.

This is going to go down as one of our worst off seasons ever. Trade a 2nd plus change for a shitty, backup caliber QB so we can release our shitty, backup caliber QB. Trade away our proven, starting caliber LT to replace that second rounder we traded for a shitty, backup caliber QB. Use the number one overall pick on an LT to replace our proven, starting caliber LT we traded to replace the second rounder we traded for a shitty, backup caliber QB.

This is a surefire way to win some Super Bowls IMO. We just need to keep running in place and at some point the world will shift around us putting us in the Super Bowl.
